Thor and the Dating App

Monday: Bullitt (1968)       Bullitt is a cop who is tasked with protecting a witness for an upcoming trail against a mob organization. The witness is the brother of the head of the mob. He is going to snitch on them. An up and coming politician/lawyer needs this case to go well so he can move up in the politics world. When the witness is killed Bullitt realizes there is more going on than he was told. He needs to find the leader of the mob and end this. I liked the movie ok. The music was kind of weird. There would only sometimes be music. Usually in a car chase or something like that. It sounded like the Pink Panther theme song. There were some random disjointed moments with Bullitt and his girlfriend. They didn't add to the plot at all. It took away from the rest of the movie. They should have just cut those scenes.  Tuesday: Double Feature- The Perfect Date (2019) and The Last Picture Show (1971)           The Perfect Date is abou...

Haunted Dessert and the Sasquatch

After not going to a restaurant on my list for a while I was able to go to two this week. The first is Pizza Jerk. We went to the 42nd Ave. location. It is set up like a classic pizza place with white and red checkered tables and all that. But it also has a rocker Portland vibe. There are posters for rock bands on the walls. Beer seems to be the popular beverage this being Portland and all. It is family friendly. There is a huge outdoor eating area. The service was ok. Maybe that's the jerk in Pizza Jerk. We got the thin crust New York style pizza. Half Meatzza and half Margarita. It was good but the crust was burnt. There wasn't anything special that would have me coming back again. There are places closer to me with better pizza.         For dessert we went to Rimsky-Korsakoffee House. If the GPS on my phone hadn't told me we had arrived I would have just driven right past it. There is a small sign above the door, but you can't see it u...

John Lennon and the Doppelgänger

Tuesday: Life with Father (1947)       This movie is about a family who lives around the strict rules of the father. He has a very specific way he wants things done. He is a financial business man and keeps track of every cent. His family has grown to accept his ways. His wife knows how to get around him to get what she wants. He learns that he needs to make some changes and to let things be. I liked this movie. I don't know that I have seen a movie with Irene Dunne in color before. I'm also not sure this movie was originally in color because all the colors seemed extra bright and a little off. Wednesday: The Prisoner of Zenda (1937)       An Englishman goes to the Ruritarian countryside on vacation. There he meets the future king. They look exactly alike. They discover they are long lost cousins. The prince is there to celebrate before he is crowned king the next day. He drinks some wine that turns out to be drugged. His friends realize that his brothe...

Shazam and the Wartime Musical

Tuesday: Inside Daisy Clover (1965)      This movie is about a teenage girl named Daisy. She is poor and lives with her mentally unstable mother. She is a good singer. Daisy sends a recording of her voice into a movie studio contest. She wins and becomes the next big thing. She becomes famous over night. She meets another actor working at the same studio. He is very handsome and charming. They get married. Then after one day of their honeymoon he disappears. It turns out he is gay and prone to running away. Daisy continues to work in movies, but faces many struggles and ends up quitting. This movie was ok. It just seemed like it was trying too hard to be something it's not. Friday: Shazam! (2019)       A foster kid rides a subway and ends up in a mythical cave. He meets a wizard who gives him super powers. Whenever he says, "Shazam" he turns into an adult man in a super hero suit and has super powers. He works with his foster brother to figure...

Dumbo and the Journey to Shangri-La

Monday: Lost Horizon (1937)      A government official is sent to evacuate people from China. He is one of the last to leave. The plane is hijacked and they are taken off course. Then the plane crashes into a snowy mountain. Everyone survives but the pilot. A mysterious group of villagers rescues them and takes them back to their village. It is hidden between the mountains. It is untouched by snow or cold. It is a beautiful paradise protected by the mountains. They call it Shangri-La. There are many mysterious and fantastical things about this place. The new people are resistant at first but then slowly grow to like it. I liked this movie. Tuesday: My Favorite Wife  (1940)       This movie stars Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. They play a married couple. Ellen is lost at sea for seven years and presumed dead. Nick has finally moved on and married another woman. Then Ellen returns home that same day. She had lived on an island before being rescued. She ...

World's Best Fish and Chips and the Crazy Aunt

The next place on my list is a food cart called The Original Halibuts. They have an actual restaurant location too. It was located at the Piedmont Station Food Carts on Killingsworth. It was a gas station before it hosted food carts. It's nice because there is plenty of seating, indoor and outdoor. And there are bathrooms. At The Original Halibuts I got the Alaskan Halibut fish and chips. It was the best fish and chips I have ever had. The fish was so good. The french fries were nicely seasoned. Also the people running the truck are very nice. I would go back there for sure. For the last 6 years I have volunteered at the Portland International Film Festival. The first two films are from that. Tuesday: The Dead and the Others (2018)       This movie is from Brazil. It is about a indigenous teenager living in a small village. His father died. He has a dream that his dad is by a waterfall. So he goes to the waterfall and his dad's ghost...

Captain Marvel and the Sappy Romance

No restaurant because I was on vacation. Monday: Show Boat (1951)         This movie is about a traveling show boat. They stop in different towns and hold a variety show. The main character is Magnolia who is the daughter of the owner of the company. She starts out behind stage. She meets a gambling actor who discovers she is a very talented singer. Then her friend Julie is prosecuted by the police in a town because she is black and is dating a white man. They must leave. So Magnolia and the gambler take over as the leads. They fall in love. She marries him against the advice of her loved ones. They leave the boat. Soon she realizes that his gambling is costing them everything and she leaves him. I liked this movie alright. There are some really good songs. I have seen the 1936 version. I admit one of the reasons I like this one better is because it is in color. The actress who plays Julie is white. They just made her look tan. I don't like that. Especially becaus...
