Tuesday: Inside Daisy Clover (1965)
This movie is about a teenage girl named Daisy. She is poor and lives with her mentally unstable mother. She is a good singer. Daisy sends a recording of her voice into a movie studio contest. She wins and becomes the next big thing. She becomes famous over night. She meets another actor working at the same studio. He is very handsome and charming. They get married. Then after one day of their honeymoon he disappears. It turns out he is gay and prone to running away. Daisy continues to work in movies, but faces many struggles and ends up quitting. This movie was ok. It just seemed like it was trying too hard to be something it's not.
Friday: Shazam! (2019)
A foster kid rides a subway and ends up in a mythical cave. He meets a wizard who gives him super powers. Whenever he says, "Shazam" he turns into an adult man in a super hero suit and has super powers. He works with his foster brother to figure out what powers he has. Along the way they have a lot of fun with the whole situation. There is a villain who wants his powers. The kid must defeat the villain. I liked this movie a lot. It is a lot of fun. It is cheesy but still good.
Monday: Double Feature- Apostle (2018) and South Pacific (1958)
Apostle is about a man named Thomas. He is estranged from his family. Then he learns that his sister has been taken for ransom. His father is unable to go rescue her. So Thomas must go. His sister was taken to an island that is run by a religious cult. It seems normal at first but then he discovers that something very dark is going on. The cult believes in a goddess who provides for them by helping the crops grow and keeping the animals healthy. But Thomas discovers that the goddess is real. And the way she provides for the island is by consuming blood. He must work quickly to rescue his sister and get off the island. This movie was pretty weird. It is well done. Mostly I watched it because Dan Stevens is in it. He is such a good actor. His face is so expressive.
South Pacific is the film version of the famous musical. It takes place on a group of Polynesian islands during WW II. Soldiers and nurses live on the island. The movie focuses on two people. The first is Nellie, a nurse. She falls is love with an older French refugee who lives on the island. She struggles with wanting to stay on the island after the war with him. Also she struggles with the fact that the French man had a Polynesian wife, who died, and had children with her. The second character is Lt. Cable. He is there to go on a secret mission. He falls is love with a young Polynesian woman. Cable and Nellie both stop themselves from committing to the people they love because of the difference in race. Nellie doesn't know if she can be with a man who was married to an asian woman. Cable doesn't know if he can be married to an asian woman. In the end they realize how stupid they have been. They just want to be with the people they love. I liked this movie. It was a classic musical that I hadn't seen. Although I did know some of the songs, thanks to Connie and Carla. Most of the time in the movie they just break into song. It isn't a performance or anything. But after one song sung by Nellie the Frenchman comments on the song. It is almost like breaking down the 4th wall. He notices that she was singing. That doesn't happen in the rest of the movie when they randomly break into song. Also I thought it was interesting that for some parts of the movie there would be a color tint to what you are seeing. Like pink when they are in love or yellow when they are happy or hopeful.
