Noodles and the Lion King

The next place on my list was Frank's Noodle House. We went to the location on NE Broadway. It is in an old house in a busy area. There is minimal decorations. Just some small paintings on the walls and things like that. It was amusing to see tennis balls on the bottom of all the chair legs. I guess to prevent the floor from being scratched up. Also the whole place seemed to be vibrating. Like you were on a Disneyland ride or something. I'm guessing it was the generator. You get free soup. Also you get some radish and kimchi. The kimchi is to help you gauge how much spiciness you can take. We got some dumplings. I got the noodles with pork belly. My sister got a vegetable noodle soup. The dumplings were ok. I liked the noodles. I got the lowest spiciness that you could get and it was fine. I did my best to use chopsticks. But the noodles are thick and long, and I gave up and used a fork near the end. The service was very fast. We ordered and in about 5 minutes...

Madam Curie and the Poltergeist

Monday: Madam Curie (1943)        This movie is about Madame Curie. The movie starts with her college days at the Sorbonne. Being one of the only women she had a hard time fitting in. A professor suggested she work on a project for the college. There she met Pierre Curie. He was resistant at first to women in science. But he soon came around. They fell in love. Marie was fascinated by the fact that some materials gave off energy constantly. She started to study what she called radium. Pierre helped her. It took several years to get it separated from other elements. Many doubted what they were doing would actually come to anything. Marie had some health problems because of the radium. In the end they were successful and even won the nobel prize. I liked this movie. It was interesting to learn about Madam Curie. One thing that was slightly off putting is that the actor who played Pierre didn't even attempt a French accent. So you have this famous French man with an Am...

Two Bite Chicken Skewer and the Late Nigh Show

I went to a restaurant called Tusk this week with one of my best friends. It is on East Burnside. It is a middle eastern place. You can't really tell that when you walk in. It is very clean and modern. It feels like a resort. My mom later pointed out that it is like Abu Dhabi, which is very sleek and modern. Which makes sense. It is a small place. We went for dinner on a Wednesday but it was still very busy. It was also loud. We ended up sitting at the bar. Which wasn't too bad actually. We got two appetizers, a hummus plate and a mezze plate. We also each go a skewer. I got the lamb one with a yogurt sauce. It was a good thing we got appetizers because there is only about 3 bites worth of meat on the skewers. You would have to get 4 or more to actually make a meal. But they are $6 each so that could get expensive. The food was good. The service was mixed. The host was rude. He barely looked up at me. He didn't greet me. He seemed annoyed that so...

Teemah Burger and the Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman

The next place on my list was Killer Burger. We went to the one on SW 3rd ave. It is a small chain so there are multiple locations. It has a rocker vibe. The loud music, the walls are painted black, and the general atmosphere lend to this vibe. Also the burger names have a rocker theme. Even the people who work there seem like they are all going to a rock concert after work. The service was good. Every burger has bacon. Which is always a good thing. I got the Teemah burger. It had bacon and blue cheese fondue and crumbles. It was really good. Right now I would rank it the best burger in Portland. The fries were pretty decent too. I would go back to any location. Monday: King Solomon's Mines (1950)         Guide and adventurer Allan lives and works in Africa. He mostly leads hunting trips. He is contacted by Elizabeth and her brother. Elizabeth's husband has disappeared into the African wilderness. He was in search of treasure. She...

Chicken Tibs and the World Forgets the Beatles

I was able to go to two places on my list this week. The first was Huber's Cafe on SW 3rd. It is the oldest restaurant in Portland. It opened in 1879. There are two entrances. One to be seated in the restaurant and the other to be seated in the bar. The bar is by far more impressive. It has high ceilings and stained glass pieces. From the whole restaurant you can imagine what it would have been like when it opened. We didn't realize there were two entrances. So we were seated in the restaurant part. We were by the kitchen so it was a little loud. But the bar was a lot louder. There is a lot of wood paneling. It would be a nice cozy place to go in the winter. It has a fancy feel to it but the prices aren't too bad. Their specialties are turkey dinners and Spanish coffee. Both my sister and I got turkey pot pie. It has a corn bread topping, and comes with mashed potatoes and broccoli. I also got a caesar salad. It was all really good. I would go back. I would si...
