The next place on my list was Killer Burger. We went to the one on SW 3rd ave. It is a small chain so there are multiple locations. It has a rocker vibe. The loud music, the walls are painted black, and the general atmosphere lend to this vibe. Also the burger names have a rocker theme. Even the people who work there seem like they are all going to a rock concert after work. The service was good. Every burger has bacon. Which is always a good thing. I got the Teemah burger. It had bacon and blue cheese fondue and crumbles. It was really good. Right now I would rank it the best burger in Portland. The fries were pretty decent too. I would go back to any location.
Monday: King Solomon's Mines (1950)
Guide and adventurer Allan lives and works in Africa. He mostly leads hunting trips. He is contacted by Elizabeth and her brother. Elizabeth's husband has disappeared into the African wilderness. He was in search of treasure. She wants Allan to help her find her husband. Where her husband disappeared it is very dangerous. Especially for white people. Even other African tribes don't want to go there. She is not the adventurer type. Allan is reluctant to go because there is a good chance they won't survive. Even if they do her husband might not be alive. Still Elizabeth is determined to go and offers to pay Allan handsomely. So he agrees. They set off with her brother and some African tribesmen. They face many obstacles on their journey. I liked this movie ok. It wasn't great but it wasn't bad. Also there is a certain time period maybe from the mid 40s to the mid 50s where movies in color are just starting. So when I go to watch these films I'm never sure if they will be in color or not. I don't mind black and white films but I am always glad when they are in color.
Tuesday: Seven Sweethearts (1942)
This is a musical set in a Dutch town in Michigan. Henry is a New York reporter sent there to cover the tulip festival. All the people in the town are very happy and friendly. They are content to stay in this little town forever. Henry stays at the local inn. The owner has seven daughters who all work there. Before they were born the father had picked out boys names because he was convinced he would have all sons. The names where already chosen. So even though they are all girls they have boys names. Henry is in awe at how beautiful they all are. He is determined to meet the oldest Regina (Reggie). The father has a rule that his eldest daughter has to be married before the others can get married. The other sisters are glad to pawn off Regina on Henry. Soon after meeting her Henry realizes that she is horrible. She is obsessed with being an actress and thinks she is an amazing actress, even though all she does is pose and spout out quotes. Henry's affections turn to Billie, the youngest. They fall in love. But Regina still needs to be married first. They have to figure out how to make everyone happy. I liked this movie. Although it wasn't really a musical. It was mostly just Kathryn Grayson as Billie performing at festival events. Kathryn Grayson is an opera singer and that is the only way they seem to want her to sing. I can't stand opera. So I fast forwarded through her songs. Sorry but not sorry.
Wednesday: The Verdict (1982)
Frank is a down on his luck lawyer with a drinking problem. He has no clients. His friend gives him a case. A young woman was died during a surgery. She shouldn't have died. Her sister believes it was the doctor's fault. She wants to sue them for malpractice. Frank initially takes the case to get money. But the more he learns the more he realizes this need to go to trial. The young woman needs justice. The doctor's lawyer is very good. He works to bring down Frank and his dwindling evidence. The is a really good movie.
Thursday: Basic Instinct (1992)
A violent cop on probation is assigned to the case of a murdered club owner. He goes to talk to the girlfriend, Catherine. She is an author with a degree in psychology. Catherine will not give any good information to the cops. Nick, the violent cop, starts to look into her. She had just published a book that had every detail about the murder in it. All her books are like this and all seem to connect with a murder. Nick suspects that she is the killer. He has no proof. He follows her around. She plays mind games with him and claims to be writing a book about him. Which would make him the next victim. While trying to prove she is the killer he falls for her. I liked this move ok. I don't know how well it holds up over the years. Also I'm sorry but Michael Douglas is not good at playing any romantic scene. He is the worst kisser.
Friday: Spiderman: Far From Home (2019)
Peter is dealing with the loss of his mentor Tony Stark. He just wants to be a teenager for a little while. He doesn't want to be Spiderman. His class is going on a trip to Europe. Peter plans to have fun and tell M.J. how he feels. But he is not so lucky. An alien force is attacking different cities all over the world. Nick Fury calls Peter in to help. Peter meets Quentin Beck, who gains the name Mysterio. Beck is from another Earth. He has fought these aliens, which he calls Elementals, on his Earth. They destroyed his Earth and he wants to help save Peter's Earth. Peter reluctantly teams up with him to fight the Elementals. He still just wants to be on the trip with his friends. Soon he realizes that that will be impossible and he will have to save his friends. I liked this movie a lot. Spiderman is my favorite superhero. So I like any movie about him (excluding Spiderman 3).
