Chicken Tibs and the World Forgets the Beatles

I was able to go to two places on my list this week. The first was Huber's Cafe on SW 3rd. It is the oldest restaurant in Portland. It opened in 1879. There are two entrances. One to be seated in the restaurant and the other to be seated in the bar. The bar is by far more impressive. It has high ceilings and stained glass pieces. From the whole restaurant you can imagine what it would have been like when it opened. We didn't realize there were two entrances. So we were seated in the restaurant part. We were by the kitchen so it was a little loud. But the bar was a lot louder. There is a lot of wood paneling. It would be a nice cozy place to go in the winter. It has a fancy feel to it but the prices aren't too bad. Their specialties are turkey dinners and Spanish coffee. Both my sister and I got turkey pot pie. It has a corn bread topping, and comes with mashed potatoes and broccoli. I also got a caesar salad. It was all really good. I would go back. I would sit in the bar next time.
The second place I went was Enat Kitchen on N Killingsworth with one of my best friends. It is a Ethiopian place. It has a beautiful mural painted on the outside. Inside it has a diner feel to it. There are Ethiopian decorations. It is not overly done but just enough to make it different and clear you are in an African place. I don't know if it was just because it was a little cold outside but it was really hot in there. We immediately took off all our layers. I got a chicken tibs dish with scrambled eggs. It is served on a big plate that is completely covered in a thin bread called injera. On top of that is a little salad. In a dish, also on top of the injera, is the chicken tibs. You eat with your hands. It was really good. I liked the bread a lot. It was tasty on it's own. You use it to scoop up the salad and tibs. It was thin enough that you don't fill up just on it. It was a little spicy but only because of the jalapeños. I picked them out and it was fine. My friend got a beef or lamb version of what I got and she liked it. I would go back.

Monday: Dangerous When Wet (1953)
Katie lives on a farm with her family. Her family is very athletic. They do laps in their pond everyday before breakfast. Katie is more interested in improving the farm than swimming. That being said she is a very good swimmer. A better than anyone else in her family. While in town one day she meets Windy, he is a health drink salesman. He talks to Katie and gets an idea. There is a swimming race every year across the English Channel. Katie and her family could swim it and be sponsored by his company. His company would get good exposure. If they win they could use the money to improve the farm. Katie and her family agree. Once in Europe they realize only Katie will be able to swim the channel. She agrees to help out. She also meets a French champagne salesman and falls in love. This is a good movie. It is a musical. Of course Katie is played by Ester Williams, one of the great swimmer actresses. And there is a musical number where she dances beautifully under the water with cartoon characters Tom and Jerry. Also there is a chance I have seen this before but I don't remember. It was still enjoyable the possibly second time.

Wednesday: Harper (1966)
This movie is about a private detective named Harper who is hired to find a wealthy woman's husband. As he investigates he finds out that man he is searching for is not a good man. The more people he talks to the more complicated the situation gets. Every clue leads to more questions. He ends up solving more than one case. I liked this movie. Paul Newman was good as Harper. I liked that Harper was goofy and witty.

Friday: Yesterday (2019)
Jack is a struggling singer/song writer who is managed by his friend Ellie. One night the power goes out all over the world. And in that instant he is hit by a bus. When he wakes up he discovers he is the only one to remember The Beatles. He realizes he can use their songs as his own. Jack is discovered online by Ed Sheeran. He goes on tour with Ed. Ed's manager want to sign Jack and make him famous. People are amazed with all these great songs. Fame comes with it's struggles like maybe losing Ellie forever. Although Jack wanted to be famous he comes to realize he's not sure if it's worth it if it's all a lie. He has to decide what he wants to do. This is a really good movie. Of course the music is great. Danny Boyle directed it so you know it will be visually amazing. And it's by the same writer who wrote Love Actually, Notting Hill, and all those other great films. I thought I heard something about him not writing any more films. I am so glad he did.

Sunday: The Aftermath (2019)
WWII has been over for 5 months when British citizen Rachael meets her soldier husband in Germany. He is stationed there to help with the aftermath of the war. They take over the house of a German architect named Stephen and his daughter. He had lost his wife in the war. Rachael and her husband had lost their son. There is a lot of tension between the British and German people. Rachael is very resistant to being around so many German people. Her marriage has been strained ever since their son died. Her husband doesn't do much to try and connect with her. She realizes that not all Germans are bad. With her husband often gone she starts an affair with Stephan. War changed them all and they don't know where they will end up. I liked this movie.

Travel Friends and the Logger's Life

Friday: No Other Choice (2025)         This is a Korean film. Man-su was let go after working at a paper factory for many years. He struggles to find a new job. Without his income his family has to start making cuts. It really starts to wear down on Man-su. There is a position at another paper factory. There are only a few men qualified for the job. Man-su realizes if he eliminates the competition he will get the job. So he eliminates them, permanently. I thought this movie was alright. Weird and violent. The acting is good. Saturday: Merrily We Roll Along (2025)          This is actually a broadway musical that they filmed. It shows the friendship of a lyricist, Frank, a playwright, Charley, and a writer, Mary. The plays starts in the mid 70s. Frank is a big shot in Hollywood. Mary comes to visit him after the success of his most recent movie. Their relationship is strained. He doesn't even talk to Charley anymore. From there the story...

Surprise Chorizo and the Floating Castle

Well after two months I was finally able to go to a restaurant on my list. I went to Tight Tacos, the SE Division location. There is neighborhood parking on the streets behind it, but you might have to drive around a little. It is a small restaurant next to other restaurants and shops. They were only open for take out but there were picnic tables you could sit at on the sidewalk. The tables were in the shade so it was nice on a warm day. From what I could see inside it was clean and modern. There is some color and hanging Christmas lights. The service was good. I got three tacos: chicken, carnitas, and asada. I think that I got chorizo instead of asada. It was actually the best one flavor wise. The carnitas meat was good but there wasn't a lot of flavor. I forgot to ask for no onions so I had to scrape them off. The tacos were good. I would go back. The one problem I had was they serve the food in takeout containers. And they have tables for you to sit ...

King George III and the Abandoned Door

Friday: Fight or Flight (2025)       Lucas is a former secret service agent. He was stranded in Bangkok after a failed assignment. Later he receives a call from his ex who know works at a different agency. A target, only known as Ghost, is getting on a plane headed for the U.S. He is the only one close enough to get on the plane in time. Lucas has to find Ghost and bring them home. Soon he discovers the plane is filled with people wanting to kill both of them. Lucas has to protect Ghost. This movie was ok. Except for the two main actors, all the acting is bad. The writing is bad. It's like they thought they could just put in a bunch of swear words and not have to actually write dialogue. There are some fun moments. It's basically Bullet Train but on a plane. Just watch Bullet Train instead. Saturday: Suzume (2022)       Suzume is a teenage girl living in Japan. One day she meets a mysterious young man, Souta, who is looking for an abandoned place with...
