I went to a restaurant called Tusk this week with one of my best friends. It is on East Burnside. It is a middle eastern place. You can't really tell that when you walk in. It is very clean and modern. It feels like a resort. My mom later pointed out that it is like Abu Dhabi, which is very sleek and modern. Which makes sense. It is a small place. We went for dinner on a Wednesday but it was still very busy. It was also loud. We ended up sitting at the bar. Which wasn't too bad actually. We got two appetizers, a hummus plate and a mezze plate. We also each go a skewer. I got the lamb one with a yogurt sauce. It was a good thing we got appetizers because there is only about 3 bites worth of meat on the skewers. You would have to get 4 or more to actually make a meal. But they are $6 each so that could get expensive. The food was good. The service was mixed. The host was rude. He barely looked up at me. He didn't greet me. He seemed annoyed that someone as unhip as me would even talk to him. That being said the bartender who waited on us was very nice. He answered all our questions. I'm not sure if I would go back. If I did I would go for an early dinner.
Monday: Slap Shot (1977)
Slap Shot is about a failing hockey team in a city centered around a factory. Reggie is the oldest player on the team and the coach. The team is his whole life and he's not ready to let it go. When the factory closes down less people come to the games. So the team owner decides this will be the last season before ending the team. Reggie finds this out after they have been on the road for a while for the new season. He wants to save the team. So he starts convincing the team that they need to play dirty. Every game from then on has several fights and injuries. But they do start winning more and get attention. Then Reggie realizes that it might not be worth it. I liked this movie ok. Paul Newman as Reggie was good. It is literally a slap stick comedy.
Thursday: A Taste of Honey (1961)
Jo is a young girl about to graduate from school. She is fed up with her mom moving them from place to place when she can't pay rent. She also doesn't like that her mom keeps getting married to jerks. Jo meets a nice sailor. They fall in love and get engaged. But then he has to sail out on his ship. She never sees him again. When her mom gets married again and ditches her at the beach Jo decides to move out. She gets a job at a shoe store and finds an apartment. Then she meets a young gay man named Geoffrey. He ends up moving in with her. She then finds out she is pregnant. Geoffrey offers to take care of her. This movie was ok. The hateful/ dependent relationship of Jo and her mom is a little confusing. Also there was loud weird music through out the movie that seeming out of place. Maybe it was a 60s thing.
Friday: Late Night (2019)
Katherine Newbury is the host of a late night talk show. Her show is failing. The network executive in charge of the show tells her this will be her last season. She doesn't want to stop doing the show. She doesn't understand that her rudeness, anti social behavior, and stubbornness on the show's guests are what is making her show fail. Katherine realizes that she doesn't have any women writers. She has one hired. Molly is a young Indian woman who used to work at a chemical factory. She got the interview from an essay writing contest. Molly gets the job. She has a hard time fitting in. But she turns out to be exactly what Katherine needed to change the show. I liked this movie. I liked the humor. Especially that it wasn't crude or awkward the whole time. Mindy Kaling wrote the screenplay and a woman directed, which it cool.
Saturday: The Professor (2018)
This movie is about a English professor named Richard who is diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. He decides that he is going to live the rest of his life how he wants to. He has no filters anymore and won't put up with people he doesn't like. He kicks most of his students out of his class with an automatic C and changes the format of the class. Richard decides not to tell his wife and daughter at first. His wife is cheating on him. She tell him and he doesn't care. They stay together as friends. He is supportive of his daughter who came out as gay. Richard gains this beautiful outlook on life. He sees that you have to appreciate every day, every breathe. He teaches this to his students, family and friends. It is a sad movie because he is dying. But there is a lot of humor in it too. It is a good movie. Johnny Depp as Richard does a good job as always.
