Saturday: Power Ballad (2026)
Rick is an American living in Ireland. He was in a band when he was young that never took off. Now he is the lead singer in a wedding band. At a big wedding Rick meets Danny Wilson. Danny is an American pop star who was part of a band now trying to go solo. He is friends with the groom. At first Rick is annoyed by Danny's presence at the wedding. But then they get to talking about music and get on well. They spend the night talking and playing each other their songs. After the wedding Rick returns to his life. Danny goes back to the US. He struggles to write songs. He ends up using a song that Rick wrote. It becomes a hit. Rick hears it and knows it's his song. No one believes him. He is determined to prove he wrote it and get some credit. I thought this movie was good. Nick Jonas is Danny. He is acting is alright. It's just hard to know with him. He is reserved. So most of the time he comes off as either not really committing to something or cocky. He's hard to read. That comes across in his acting.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Friday: The Furious (2026)
This is a Chinese film. Wang Wei is mute. He is Chinese but lives and works in Thailand. He can't go back to China for reasons unknown. His daughter is visiting while school is on break. One day she is kidnapped. Wang does his best to chase the kidnappers down but loses track of them. The police are no help. He has to find his daughter on his own. Eventually he ends up teaming up with a reporter who's wife went missing investigating the increase in missing children cases. They have to work together to save the missing kids. This movie was alright. It has some crazy action sequences. It's strange because part of it has subtitles. I think maybe when they are speaking Thai. The other part is dubbed in English. I don't know why they didn't just do subtitles for the whole thing. The dubbing cheapens it.
Saturday: Stage Mother (2020)
Maybelline is a conservative church choir director. She finds out that her estranged son has died. She travels to San Fransisco to attend his funeral. While there she meets Nathan, her son's boyfriend. They own a drag club. Because they weren't married the bar now belongs to Maybelline. She isn't sure what to do. This is everything she was against. She goes to the club and sees how it is failing. Her views start to change. She decides to help save the club and make it better. Maybelline soon realizes how wrong her beliefs were and finds a new community. I thought this movie was alright. Better than I thought it would be.
Sunday: I am Frankelda (2025)
This is a Mexican stop motion film. Frankelda has had a hard life. Losing her parents and being raised by a strict grandmother. Her escape is her writing. She is a passionate writer. There is an underworld fulled by her imagination and fears. The royal family in this world are worried about it's survival. There aren't enough nightmares and stories to fuel it. Their own nightmare writer is lacking. The young prince discovers Frankelda and her writing. Her stories could save them. He convinces her to travel with him back to his realm. There she finds all her stories have come to life. She must help to save the realm. This movie was alright. The storyline was a little confusing. Was she really going to another realm or her own subconscious. Was she fueling it or were all nightmares. The animation reminded me a little of Rankin/Bass films (Rudoplh the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Clause is Comin' to Town), but with a lot of detail. The character and set design styles are unique. Also a little ugly. Not sure how else to describe it. Just a little off putting. Maybe it is too much detail.
