Friday: No Other Choice (2025)
This is a Korean film. Man-su was let go after working at a paper factory for many years. He struggles to find a new job. Without his income his family has to start making cuts. It really starts to wear down on Man-su. There is a position at another paper factory. There are only a few men qualified for the job. Man-su realizes if he eliminates the competition he will get the job. So he eliminates them, permanently. I thought this movie was alright. Weird and violent. The acting is good.
Saturday: Merrily We Roll Along (2025)
This is actually a broadway musical that they filmed. It shows the friendship of a lyricist, Frank, a playwright, Charley, and a writer, Mary. The plays starts in the mid 70s. Frank is a big shot in Hollywood. Mary comes to visit him after the success of his most recent movie. Their relationship is strained. He doesn't even talk to Charley anymore. From there the story goes back in time. Showing how they progressed from friends to no longer friends. Frank and Charley were an up and coming duo on Broadway. They had a successful show and were set to do more before things fell apart. This is a good musical. It is the Stephen Sondheim adaptation. When doubling checking a fact I saw that they are doing a film adaptation of the play. They are filming it over the course of 20 years. So they will shot each segment over the years and the actors will age. It will come out in about 2040. Crazy to think about working on a movie for that many years. The writer and director did something similar with Boyhood.
Sunday: Double Feature- Bugonia (2025) and People We Meet on Vacation (2026)
Bugonia is about a conspiracy obsessed man, Teddy, and his cousin Don. They have been through some rough times. So has their town. Teddy is convinced this is the work of aliens. He believes one lives among them, Michelle. Michelle is the CEO of a major company. Teddy and Don kidnap Michelle and keep her as their hostage in their basement. Teddy wants her to confess to being an alien and tell her leader to help them. Michelle denies being an alien. But is she? I thought this movie was ok. It's pretty weird. And the dialogue is equal parts conspiracy and corporate babble. I knew I wouldn't really like it. But I just had to see if she was an alien or not.
People We Meet on Vacation is about a young woman named Poppy. She is a travel writer who gets invited to a wedding where she knows she will run into her ex friend, Alex. While debating whether to go we look back at their friendship. Poppy and Alex are from the same small town and end up going to the same college. Alex ends up giving Poppy a ride home. They are complete opposites. Poppy is talkative and adventurous. Alex likes to plan things out and stick to what he knows. Over the course of the trip they become friends. They make a deal that each year they will go on a trip together. Although they try to deny it their friendship grows to be more. Which is almost the ruin of them. This movie is a good. A fun rom com.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Saturday: The Running Man (2025)
Set in a dystopian future. Ben is let go from his job. No one will hire him because he doesn't follow the social norms. His daughter is sick and he is desperate to get her medicine. His last option is to get on a game show. Hoping to get on a easy show to make just enough for her meds. Instead he gets chosen to be on a show called the Running Man. He will be on the run from hunters chasing him. Civilians can report him as well. If caught he will be killed. If he can last a month he can win a lot of money. Along with the initial bonus he would have enough to get his family out of the slums. So he angrily agrees. Ben has to do all he can to survive. I thought this movie was alright.
Sunday: Train Dreams (2025)
Robert is a logger and railway worker in the early 1900s. He never cared about anything until he meets his wife Gladys. They start a simple life together. They build a small cabin in Idaho and have a baby girl. Robert continues to work as a logger and railway worker. He meets some interesting people. But the work is dangerous. He doesn't really have any other options. Robert's life has ups and downs but he keeps going. This movie is good. I wasn't sure I would like this movie. It's simple and has a lot of nature shots. But it worked. The pacing was good and there is enough intrigue to keep you watching. There are some beautiful nature shots. Also Libby, Montana was mentioned so that's a plus.
