Jessie and the Channel Swimmer

Friday: Young Woman and the Sea (2024)

This is based on a true story. Trudy was born in 1905 and raised in NYC by her parents who were German immigrants. She was tenacious from a young age. She was very ill as a child but pulled through. During that time women weren't taught to swim. But after a major accident on a ferry Trudy's mom was determined that her daughters would swim. Trudy loves to swim. Later after some obstacles she joins a women swim team. Through hard work she becomes a record breaking competitive swimmer. Even competing at the 1924 Olympics and medaling. Still no one took woman athletes seriously. So in an attempt to gain attention for them Trudy decides to swim the English Channel. It is a very difficult swim. Spoiler alert: she becomes the first woman to swim the channel. I thought this movie was alright. A very interesting story. She was an incredible woman. Trudy broke the men's record for crossing the channel by 2 hours.

Saturday: The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015)

This is also based on a true story, set in the 1910s. Srinivasa Ramanujan is young Indian man with highly intelligent mathematical brain. He is able to write complex equations that could lead to great discoveries. His lack of education and his income class prevent anyone from taking him seriously. He eventually gets a job doing accounting. There he makes connections. He is told to send his work to a Professor Hardy at Cambridge. Hardy arranges for Ramanujan to travel to Cambridge from India. There he works with Hardy to prove his work and get recognized by the mathematics community. He faces many obstacles like illness and WWI. Still he is successful in being recognized. This movie was alright.

Sunday: Disclosure Day (2026)

Proof of alien life has been found. Daniel discovered it at his private sector tech job. He steals the proof and is preparing to release it to the world. Margaret is a weather reporter who starts to have some strange symptoms. She speaks in an alien language on air. Somehow she can speak Russian and Korean without even knowing she is doing it. Margaret knows she needs to find Daniel. Meanwhile Daniel's former boss is trying to track him down. They want to control the narrative. I thought this movie was good. An interesting storyline. Steven Spielberg directed it. He's great about not giving too much away till the end. The reveal is always worth it. Close Encounters of the Third Kind is still my favorite of his alien movies.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Saturday: Toy Story 5 (2026)

Bonnie is struggling to make friends. Jessie and the rest of the toys are trying to help her. Bonnie's parents get her a Lilypad (basically an ipad) to help her connect with other kids. Jessie and the others fear this will be the end of them. That tech will takeover and there will be no place for them. In desperation Jessie calls Woody for help. He comes back. Lilypad believes she knows what is best for Bonnie and tries to get rid of the toys. Jessie won't go down without a fight. It brings up bad memories from her past. She doesn't want to be left behind again. This movie was good. I wasn't sure if they would be able to pull it off. I didn't really think a fifth film was needed. Yet again they came through with a great story. It's very well done.

Travel Friends and the Logger's Life

Friday: No Other Choice (2025)         This is a Korean film. Man-su was let go after working at a paper factory for many years. He struggles to find a new job. Without his income his family has to start making cuts. It really starts to wear down on Man-su. There is a position at another paper factory. There are only a few men qualified for the job. Man-su realizes if he eliminates the competition he will get the job. So he eliminates them, permanently. I thought this movie was alright. Weird and violent. The acting is good. Saturday: Merrily We Roll Along (2025)          This is actually a broadway musical that they filmed. It shows the friendship of a lyricist, Frank, a playwright, Charley, and a writer, Mary. The plays starts in the mid 70s. Frank is a big shot in Hollywood. Mary comes to visit him after the success of his most recent movie. Their relationship is strained. He doesn't even talk to Charley anymore. From there the story...

Wolf and the Fake Fiancee

Friday: You. Me & Tuscany (2026)        Anna is a young woman who lost her passion for cooking after her mother passed. She's been housesitting, but it's not enough. One night she meets and Italian man, Matteo. They hit it off and he tells her about his empty villa in Italy that he never uses. Anna takes this as an invitation to use her pre-paid plane ticket and fly to Italy and stay at his empty villa. She gets caught by his family. They assume she is his fiancee and she goes along with it. Anna is introduced to the rest of the family, including Matteo's adopted brother Michael. Michael and Anna immediately hit it off, but can't do anything because she is engaged to his brother. When Matteo shows up things get even more complicated. I thought this movie was alright. It's cute and nice to have a new romantic comedy come out in theaters . It's just a little cheesy and over the top for me. Almost like a Hallmark movie or the like.  Saturday: The Bad Guys...

Grogu and the Friendly Neighbor

Friday: Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026)         The Mandalorian (Mando) and Grogu are working for the New Republic. There are still many Imperial Warlords out there even if the Empire has fallen. Their new assignment is to find a warlord who is dangerous but not much is known about him. The Hutts have information on him. They will give it to Mando if he can rescue their nephew, Rotta. Rotta has been kidnapped and made to fight in nightly cage matches. Mando and Grogu set out to rescue him, but much more is at play than they knew. I thought this movie was good. It's a stand alone adventure. So if you haven't watched the tv series you'll be ok. Wish I had known that before I gave me parents (who went with me) a recap of all three seasons. Oh well. They still enjoyed it. Grogu is so cute. And that's all the matters. Saturday: WarGames (1983)          David is an intelligent teen who is great with computers. While trying to get ...
