Tuesday: Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken (2023)
Ruby and her family are krakens. They are living on land and pretending to be humans. Ruby does her best to fit in in high school. She wants to go to prom with her friends. But it is being held on a boat on the ocean. Her mom forbids her from going in the water. One day she falls in and discovers what happens. Soon she meets her uncle and her grandmother who live in the ocean. She learns more about being a kraken and where she comes from. At the same time a new student arrives at school. She reveals herself to Ruby as being a mermaid. They have a lot in common, but not in the way Ruby thinks. I thought this movie was alright. It's cute.
Wednesday: Music From Another Room (1998)
After losing his mother Danny, who is five, spends Thanksgiving with his father and his mom's best friend, Grace. Grace is heavily pregnant and goes into labor. Danny's dad is a surgeon and is able to deliver the babies. But he needs smaller hands to help. So Danny helps deliver the baby. Years later, after growing up in London, Danny returns to the same town. He runs into the family again. The baby, Anna, is now all grown up. Danny feels he is destined to be with her. Her having a boyfriend doesn't stop him. Danny integrates himself with the family. Trying to get Anna to fall for him. This movie was alright. Danny is played by Jude Law. He came off as creepy for a lot of the movie. I don't think he had mastered how to be charming yet.
Friday: Wicked Little Letters (2023)
This is based on a true story set in England. Edith is a conservative middle aged woman still living at home with her parents. A loud and wild young Irish immigrant, Rose, moves next door. Despite their differences they become friends. Then there is a rift between them. Edith starts to receive horrible letters. They personally attack her and call her names. Edith believes Rose is behind the letters. Rose ends ups getting arrested and brought to trail. Some believe it couldn't be Rose and try and prove it. I thought this movie was good. Although there are quite serious moments, there is also a lot of comedy.
Saturday: Late Bloomers (2023)
Louise is a young woman in her late 20s. Her life is a mess. One drunken night ends in her falling and braking her hip. After her surgery she ends up being roomed with a rude old Polish woman, Antonina, who doesn't speak any English. They don't get along. Later they are in the same physical therapy group. They also take the same bus home. After a series of mishaps Antonina ends up spending the night at Louise's apartment. After returning her home the next day Louise is hired to be her caretaker. They become friends and make each others life better. This movie was alright. There are some good moments. But there are also a lot of awkward moments that are uncomfortable.
Sunday: Double Feature- Diabolique (1955) and If (2024)
Diabolique is a French film. Christina is the wife of a boarding school principal. She teaches at the school, and so does his mistress, Nicole. Her husband, Michel, is hated by all. He is abusive to Christina on top of cheating on her. Nicole hates him too. The women come up with a plan to kill him over a holiday weekend and have an alibi. But it doesn't go according to plan. Something else is going on. I thought this movie was good. It has a twist.
If is about a young girl named Bea. Her mother died when she was little. She comes to stay at her grandma's apartment while her dad gets surgery. She starts to see imaginary friends. They have all been forgotten by their kids. She works to help them find new kids. I thought this movie was alright. It's cute.
