Wild Socialites and the Ministry

 Wednesday: The Freshman (1990)

Clark moves to New York City to go to film school. On his first day in the city he is robbed and loses everything. He has no money for school books. Then he spots the man who robbed him, Victor, and tracks him down. Victor apologizes and promises to help Clark get a job working for his uncle. His uncle, Carmine (played by Marlon Brando), looks a lot like Vito Corleone from The Godfather. Carmine takes an immediate liking to Clark and offers him a job. All he has to do is pick up a package and deliver it. Soon Clark realizes he is working for a mobster. He's not sure if the money is worth it. I thought this movie was good. It's more of a comedy than a drama. Having Marlon Brando play a caricature of the part he played in The Godfather is fun.

Friday: The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Welfare (2024)

This is based on a true story. The British military is desperate for aide from the U.S. in WWII. German ships are blocking the route the U.S. would need to take. So Chruchill, Ian Felming, and a military official put together a small unauthorized group of men. They are to go after the main supply ships that keep the German ships running. This group is made up of men who aren't always on the right side of the law but can get the job done. They travel to the port off the coast of Africa where the ships are and come up with a plan to destroy the ships. I thought this movie was good. The leader of the group, Gus March-Phillips, was the inspiration for James Bond.

Saturday: Bright Young Things (2003)

Adam is a writer who hangs out with a group of socialites in 1930s London. The group is constantly having parties and getting into trouble. Their exploits often make the front page of the paper. Adam wrote a book about them. He was going to use the advance to get married to his girlfriend Nina. But after coming back from a trip his only copy of the book is confiscated. Now he has no money and can't marry Nina. Adam struggles to make money. All the while dealing with the drama that follows his friend group. I thought this movie was good. Although Nina was really annoying. She would only marry him if he had money. And she would often act bored by him or as if she really didn't love him. Yet he stayed with her. There were so many British actors in this that I know. Some where only small parts but it was still fun to see.

Sunday: Watching the Detectives (2007)

Neil is a film buff who owns a video rental store. He is struggling to compete with the bigger chain stores. One day he meets a woman named Violet. They go on a date. From the beginning she is wild and unpredictable. She loves adventure and pulling pranks on him. Neil never knows what is happening. She is always testing him and putting him in uncomfortable situations. Despite all that he still likes her a lot. This movie was alright.

Travel Friends and the Logger's Life

Friday: No Other Choice (2025)         This is a Korean film. Man-su was let go after working at a paper factory for many years. He struggles to find a new job. Without his income his family has to start making cuts. It really starts to wear down on Man-su. There is a position at another paper factory. There are only a few men qualified for the job. Man-su realizes if he eliminates the competition he will get the job. So he eliminates them, permanently. I thought this movie was alright. Weird and violent. The acting is good. Saturday: Merrily We Roll Along (2025)          This is actually a broadway musical that they filmed. It shows the friendship of a lyricist, Frank, a playwright, Charley, and a writer, Mary. The plays starts in the mid 70s. Frank is a big shot in Hollywood. Mary comes to visit him after the success of his most recent movie. Their relationship is strained. He doesn't even talk to Charley anymore. From there the story...

Surprise Chorizo and the Floating Castle

Well after two months I was finally able to go to a restaurant on my list. I went to Tight Tacos, the SE Division location. There is neighborhood parking on the streets behind it, but you might have to drive around a little. It is a small restaurant next to other restaurants and shops. They were only open for take out but there were picnic tables you could sit at on the sidewalk. The tables were in the shade so it was nice on a warm day. From what I could see inside it was clean and modern. There is some color and hanging Christmas lights. The service was good. I got three tacos: chicken, carnitas, and asada. I think that I got chorizo instead of asada. It was actually the best one flavor wise. The carnitas meat was good but there wasn't a lot of flavor. I forgot to ask for no onions so I had to scrape them off. The tacos were good. I would go back. The one problem I had was they serve the food in takeout containers. And they have tables for you to sit ...

Wolf and the Fake Fiancee

Friday: You. Me & Tuscany (2026)        Anna is a young woman who lost her passion for cooking after her mother passed. She's been housesitting, but it's not enough. One night she meets and Italian man, Matteo. They hit it off and he tells her about his empty villa in Italy that he never uses. Anna takes this as an invitation to use her pre-paid plane ticket and fly to Italy and stay at his empty villa. She gets caught by his family. They assume she is his fiancee and she goes along with it. Anna is introduced to the rest of the family, including Matteo's adopted brother Michael. Michael and Anna immediately hit it off, but can't do anything because she is engaged to his brother. When Matteo shows up things get even more complicated. I thought this movie was alright. It's cute and nice to have a new romantic comedy come out in theaters . It's just a little cheesy and over the top for me. Almost like a Hallmark movie or the like.  Saturday: The Bad Guys...
