Tuesday: The Clown (1953)
Dodo was once a famous clown. He even performed for Ziegfeld. He developed a drinking problem that caused him to lose the bigger gigs. So he has to perform at amusement parks and burlesque shows. Even then he can barely hold those jobs down. Dodo is raising his son, Dink, on his own. Although Dink takes care of Dodo more Dodo takes care of him. Dink often has to bring Dodo home from bars and try and remind him to save money for things like food and rent. As a desperate measure Dink reaches out to Dodo's former agent hoping to get him a gig. At the gig Dodo sees his ex who is Dink's mother. She wants to reconnect with Dink and wants to give him a better life. But Dink supports Dodo and knows he can be a star again. I thought this movie was alright. It is a drama and a comedy.
Friday: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)
The movie begins with the origin story of the four brothers. We see that there were other mutants in vials ready to be raised. There is also a mutant fly who was a baby at the time. A secret organization is trying to get the ooze that makes the mutants but in the fight they lose it. Fifteen years later the four brothers are restless. Their dad, Splinter, warns them about the human world and wants to keep them in the sewers where they live. The boys have always been fascinated by the human world and just want to live there and be accepted. One night while they are out they see a teenage girl's motorbike being stolen. Leonardo urges his brothers to help him get it back. They save the bike and meet the girl, April. She is a wannabe reporter working on the Superfly story that is all over the news. The brothers agree to help her hoping it will gain them acceptance. They end up in a battle with an army of mutants. This movie is good. It's fun. The brothers are actually voiced by teenagers. The animation is different. A combo of comic book, 2D, and CGI animation.
Sunday: Double Feature- Before the Rain (1994) and Red, White & Royal Blue (2023)
Before the Rain is a Macedonian film that is told in three parts. It takes place when Macedonia is on the brink of a civil war. It is a very dangerous time. The first part is about an orthodox Christian monk, Kiril, who has taken a vow of silence. One night he discovers a young Albanian woman dressed as a boy hiding in his room. Although he is surprised and could be kicked out of the church he agrees to hid her. Later a small militia comes looking for her. They say she has killed one of their own. The monk and the girl must escape. The second part is about a British photo agent, Anne, living in London who is having an affair with a Macedonian war photographer, Aleksander. She doesn't know what to do. Aleksander asks her to come home with him to Macedonia but she says no. Even in London the civil war in Macedonia is becoming a problem. The third part is about Aleksander going home. He has been gone for 16 years. He is surprised to see how torn apart his village is. His neutrality becomes dangerous. I thought this movie was alright. It was interesting to learn about that time in that country. The storyline was a little confusing. It's told backwards. But it doesn't explain the middle. Because events from the first part have already happened but then they happen again. Maybe it was a goof?
Red, White, & Royal Blue is about the president's son, Alex, and the Prince of England, Henry. Since Alex's mom became president he is often at events with Henry. From the beginning they don't get along. Then after an embarrassing incident at Henry's brother's wedding they are forced to appear to be friends. It will help the United States' and England's alliance if they seem to be friends. So they are forced to go to different events together and act friendly towards each other. Soon they actually do become friends and are texting all the time. Then they realize that they like each other as more than friends. They have to keep their relationship a secret. This movie is good. Not the best but still cute. It's not really on the same level as other Amazon films. It's more of a Netflix or made for TV movie.
