Tuesday: Vigil in the Night (1940)
Anne and Lucy are sisters who are nurses that work at the same hospital. One night Lucy takes over for Anne. Lucy steps away for a moment and in her absence there is a death. When they are both brought in Anne takes the blame. She has to leave the hospital. Anne ends up taking a job at a poorly run hospital. She meets a handsome doctor with big ideas for the hospital. Anne continues to have a rough time with another tragedy and an epidemic. But she and Lucy pull through. I thought this movie was good.
Wednesday: Matinee (1993)
Gene is a teenager living on a naval base in Florida. It is around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Everyone is on edge. Gene loves horror films. After seeing a movie with his little brother he finds out a movie producer is going to have a special screening of his new horror film at Gene's local theater. The producer wants to add special effects to the theater, like sending electric shocks to the seats. He doesn't care that they could be bombed any day. If anything it adds to the experience of the horror movie he is showing. This movie was alright.
Friday: Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. (2023)
Margaret is a 11 year old girl who lives with her parents in New York. Then the family moves to New Jersey. She is unhappy about this. It is a big adjustment for the family. Margaret soon makes friends with a girl who lives down the street. She brings Margaret into her group. The girls are eager for boobs and to have their periods. Margaret is desperate to grow up. She is trying to figure out who she is. Also she starts to explore religion. Her dad is Jewish and her mom is Christian, but they left it up to her to decide. It's not any easy age. Not yet a teen but not really a child. I thought this movie was alright. I haven't read the book. I found a lot of it to be relatable. Growing up can be very awkward. There's a lot you have to deal with, especially as a girl.
Saturday: My Own Private Idaho (1991)
Mike is a young man with narcolepsy who is a hustler and a drifter. He travels around the Pacific NW. He does spend a lot of time in Portland. Mike is best friends with another hustler named Scott. Scott is the son of a very wealthy man. He is rebelling. Mike is searching for his mother. He travels all over with Scott looking for her. This movie was ok. It was strange. There are moments where the way they talk is almost Shakespearean. Which is on purpose. That's how the writer/director wanted it. But still weird. There was a good portion filmed in Portland.
Sunday: The Right Stuff (1983)
This movie is about the start of the space program. First there is the man who broke the sound barrier. More pilots come to break his record. Later some of those same pilots are chosen to be astronauts. They go through rigorous testing and training. Once chosen the seven men become instant heroes. Constantly hounded by the press. One after the other goes into space, breaking records. It's not an easy life but they band together to make it through. This movie was good. Long but good.
