Tuesday: Conrack (1974)
This is based on a true story. Pat is a young white teacher who gets a job working on a small island near South Carolina. His students are poor black children. The school system has failed them. Most of them can't read, write, or do basic math. They know very little about anything. Pat has to start from the beginning and try to teach them as much as he can. His methods are unconventional, but they work. The students start to learn and become very knowledgeable. They love Pat, who they call Conrack because they couldn't pronounce his last name ConRoy. Pat's teaching methods get him in trouble. He still made a big difference in these children's lives. I thought this movie was good. I've said it before, but I'm a sucker for a good teacher story.
Wednesday: Mrs. O'Malley and Mr. Malone (1950)
Hattie O'Malley is a widow from Montana. She wins a trip to NYC where she will collect a cash prize. At a stop in Chicago she meets John Malone, who's she has seen a picture of in a detective magazine. John is a lawyer who is in debt. A former client of his, Kepplar, just got out of prison and owes John money. Kepplar skips out of town on a train to NYC. The same train Hattie is on. John jumps on the train to try and catch Kepplar. He runs into Hattie again. She ends up helping him with the case after they find Kepplar dead in John's room. They must find the killer and the money before they reach their destination. This movie was alright. More of a comedy than a drama.
Friday: Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023)
Billy is struggling to be a leader and keep his family together. They seem to be drifting apart and he's unsure of the future. Then he gets a message from the wizard letting him know about the Daughters of Atlas. They are greek gods. They are upset that Billy and his family have the power of the gods. Their plan is to take the kid's powers. Then they will find a hidden seed that will allow them to grow a tree that will bring back their world. Those plans change and could cause chaos for everyone. Billy and his family have to stop them. I thought this movie was good. Not the best but fun.
Saturday: Boston Strangler (2023)
This is inspired by a true story. It takes place in the early 60s. Loretta is a journalist who has in interest in crime. She wants to write crime stories but her editor won't let her. Loretta starts to connect murders that are happening. They are done the same way. She is allowed to write about it and breaks the story of the Boston Strangler. She also works with another journalist, Jean. The murders continue to happen. The cops struggle to catch the killer. Loretta continues to follow the story and does a better job solving it than the cops do. This movie was good. I had no idea that it was two female journalists who broke the story. Or how involved they were with the case. All I really know about the case is what I saw in the movie The Boston Strangler (1968). Which they actually show them filming in this movie. They filmed it before the case was fully solved. I'm a little confused about who actually did it. The movie from 1968 puts it all one on guy. Who was believed to be the killer at the time. Loretta and Jean discover it to be multiple people with one guy taking the blame. According to wikipedia that was only a theory.
Sunday: Luther: The Fallen Sun (2023)
This is a TV movie based on the tv show Luther. Luther starts to work a case of a teen who was kidnapped after stopping to help a car that had crashed. Before he can investigate further Luther is arrested and sent to prison for crimes he has committed. Even from prison he tries to help solve it. A serial killer is blackmailing people into doing what he wants. Ending in mass killings. The killer contacts Luther to taunt him. Luther breaks out of prison to solved the case. He finds out how truly twisted and evil this killer is. I thought this movie was good. But a little rushed.
