Tuesday: Night Shift (1982)
Chuck is a morgue attendant. He has a hard time sticking up for himself. When his boss switches Chuck to the night shift so that his unexperienced nephew can work the day shift, Chuck just goes a long with it. He also has a new coworker, Bill. Bill is very energetic and is not very devoted to his job. They do eventually get along. Chuck also meets his neighbor, Belinda, who is a prostitute. She is nice to him. Her pimp has been killed. She is left defenseless, along with many other prostitutes. Bill and Belinda convince Chuck to start a sex worker agency out of the morgue to help them stay safe. He gives in and they become a success. But there are consequences. This movie was alright.
Friday: Missing (2023)
June is a young woman who has just graduated high school. Her mom, Grace, is going on a vacation to Columbia with her boyfriend. June goes to pick them up at the airport, but they never come. She starts to get worried when she can't contact them and doesn't receive any word from them. June tries to file a missing persons report. But it's complicated because it's in Columbia and the US government can't do much. She doesn't give up and does her own investigating. At every turn she finds out something new. Each revelation turns out to not be what she thought it was. I thought this was a good movie. It keeps you guessing. You start to think you know who is responsible but then it's disproven. You don't know what to believe. This is by the same people who did Searching. It's all done on screens. So emails, face time, phone calls, etc. It's a really unique way to film a movie.
Saturday: Tar (2022)
This movie is about a famous composer named Lydia. She is also the director of the German orchestra. She lives in Germany with her wife and daughter. Lydia is a very powerful and driven woman. She knows what she wants and what is needed to achieve greatness. She is also a hard woman who uses people and casts them aside. Lydia doesn't see that what she is doing is damaging people's lives. After the tragic news of one of her former students her world starts to fall apart. This movie was ok. It's kinda boring. I mean a lot of stuff happens but the way it's filmed is very slow. It's not as weird as the trailer made it seem. Also to note the director and writer grew up in Portland.
Sunday: White Noise (2022)
Jack is a well respected professor. He lives with his wife and their blended family in the town near the university. After a tragic accident a dangerous airborne toxic event is headed their way. They have to evacuate their house and find a safe place. Even though it is a scary time they all remain relatively calm. And seem unfazed by it. Later when they can return home Jack and his wife must face their fear of death. Taking them on another crazy journey. I thought this movie was alright. The toxic event is only part of the movie. The trailer made it seem like that was going to be the whole movie. Them having to run away to survive and then live in this new world, or something like that. Everyone has a very specific way of talking. Fast and very intelligent. You really have to pay attentions to what they're saying. It reminds me a little of a Wes Anderson film, but taken to the extreme. It would be ok if one or two characters talked like that, but for everyone do it it is exhausting.
Also it's been 4 years since I started this blog.
