Last Sunday I went to Rockabilly Cafe with my parents for brunch. It is on N Lombard Street near St. John's Bridge. There is plenty of neighborhood parking. It is a 50s diner. More cars and motorcycles, less Marilyn. There is the classic checkerboard floor, red vinyl booths, and counter. There is still a bit of that vintage Portland feel to it. There's memorabilia decorating the walls. Mostly signs for Coca Cola, car wheels, and vintage gas cans. There was great 50s music playing. There is a jukebox but it was out of order when we were there. We got there after 1, which was a good time to go. Before that we were told it was packed. The menu is fun. The menu items have fun names like The Chuck Berry and The Lassie. I got the Patty Wagon, which is a patty melt. I got it with mushrooms instead of onions. It was good, but not the most exciting thing. My dad got the reuben. He liked it. My mom got a make your own omelette. She said it was good, a little boring. Being a Portland restaurant the food is organic and locally sourced. I had to get a milkshake. You can't go to a diner like that and not get a milkshake. They had the option to make any milkshake a malt. I never had a malt before and decided to go for the full 50s affect and get one. I got the Black and White Swirl. It was vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup. It was really good. The service was good. The atmosphere was great. We all enjoyed it. I would go back.
Sunday: Clean and Sober (1988)
Daryl has a major drug problem. He's nearing rock bottom. He wakes up next to a woman he spent the night with not realizing till later that she had overdosed. Daryl stole money to fund his drug problem. Worried that he will be caught he checks himself into a rehab facility. He doesn't take the program seriously. He does anything to get drugs and get out. The main counselor there knows all the tricks and doesn't put up with it. Daryl realizes maybe he is in the right place. This movie was alright.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Wednesday: Mad Max (1979)
This movie is set in a dystopian world in Australia. Most of the crime happens on the highways. Criminals will do everything for gas and car parts. Max is a highway patrolman who tracks down these criminals. After taking down one named Nightrider, Max becomes the target of a psychotic biker gang. They seek revenge for what happened to their friend. Max suffers because of them and seeks his own revenge for what they did. I thought this movie was ok. I got to say I like the one from 2015 better.
Friday: Ticket to Paradise (2022)
Lily goes on a trip to Bali after graduating law school. There she meets a local seaweed farmer named Gede. They fall in love and after a month together decide to get married. Lily's parents, Georgia and David, have long been divorced. They hate each other. They fly to Bali and join together to talk their daughter out of making a mistake. This movie was good. It was a little worried about the humor but it was not bad. It was nice to see Julia Roberts in a romantic comedy again. There were bloopers at the end of the movie. Which they don't do much anymore. I missed that.
Sunday: Willow (1988)
There is a prophecy that a child will be born that will be able to take down the evil queen who rules the land. When the baby is born she is taken and hidden away by a nurse maid. But is then left floating down a river in a basket. A young farmer named Willow finds the baby. Once he learns about who she is he goes on a journey to protect her and get her to the right people. I thought this movie was ok. It's pretty cheesy and campy.
For the moment I have more free time. Hopefully that will mean I can watch more movies. So I will probably go back to writing once a week on Mondays.
