Finally went to a restaurant off my list after three months of not going anywhere. Saturday I had lunch at Caspian Kabob. It is in the West End district in Beaverton. It is in a huge apartment complex. It used to be a food truck and now they have a brick and mortar store front (as they say). I guess it was their grand opening. I just looked on their Facebook page. It says May 17th is when they are opening. But it was open when I went there. I guess that would explain why it didn't seem completely ready. It is a family business. The decor is very simple. There are some Persian touches, but mostly just some photos and a vase on a table. The big monitor that will display the menu wasn't up yet. I got the Kubideh Kabob platter. It was ground seasoned beef/lamb with saffron rice and half a grilled tomato. The meat had good flavor. It was a little too simple. It could have used more, like a sauce. I was the only one in there besides the daughter and her friends. I felt like I was invading some private event. It was awkward. I'm not sure I would go back.
Tuesday: Cynara (1932)
Jim is a wealthy English lawyer. He is content in his life and loves his wife. On the eve of their anniversary she leaves on vacation to take her younger sister away from a bad relationship. They'll be gone four weeks. Jim goes out with his friend and meets a young woman named Doris. She takes a liking to him. He resists her at first. Jim is faithful to his wife. Doris promises that they can end it the minute he says. Jim gives in. When his wife returns and he tries to end things it doesn't go well. I thought this movie was ok. I like the actor who played Jim, Ronald Colman. Doris is a really annoying character. She is very manipulative and needy.
Wednesday: Big City (1937)
Joe and his wife Anna are very happy together. Anna and her brother came to the US from Russia. Joe and his brother in law work for a taxi cab company. They share the same cab and work different shifts. The taxi company they work ends up in a taxi war with another company. When a bomb goes off at the other company blame comes back to Joe's. When the city officials find out that Anna is a foreigner they decide to pin it on her. Joe and the other men in the company try to hide her but it comes back on them. This is a good movie. I love the relationship between Joe and Anna. Spencer Tracy is Joe. Great as always. The actress who played Anna seemed like she was a silent film star before this and hadn't quite made the transition. Her acting was a little over the top, but not too bad. I thought about making the title for this post "Kabab and the Taxi Driver (no not that Taxi Driver)". But I'm not sure if people would get it.
Friday: The Northman (2022)
Amleth is a viking prince. His father is killed by his uncle and his uncle takes his mother for his bride. Amleth escapes and runs away. He becomes a berserker. He and his fellow berserkers destroy villages and sell the people as slaves. One day he learns that his uncle is now living in Iceland. Some of the slaves from the village they destroyed are going there. Amleth his disguises himself as a slave. He plans to go to Iceland and exact his revenge. He meets a cunning woman, Olga, who is another slave. She wants to help him. Amleth starts to exact his revenge. Then he learns the truth of of his past and his true destiny. I thought this movie was ok. It was very violent and weird. I knew I wasn't going to like it, but I told myself it was a better option than the two other movies I could see. I should have seen something else. I did recognize the story. I thought this seems like Hamlet. I looked it up. It is based on the story that Hamlet is based on. After I read that I remembered learning that in school.
Saturday: Everybody's Talking About Jamie (2021)
Jamie is a young gay teenager living in Sheffield, England. His dream is to be a drag queen. His mother and best friend are supportive. Jamie's dad wants nothing to do with him. After getting his first pair of high heels Jamie decides to go to prom in drag. Before that he needs help. He finds a drag shop. The owner is a former drag queen who takes Jamie under his wing. Jamie struggles with accepting himself and figuring out how he wants to be. This is a musical based on a true story. This is a good movie. I enjoyed it. I have to admit I didn't like the actual musical parts. And Jamie's best friend it a little two-faced. She'll tell him not to do something and then two seconds later tells him he should do it. She's supportive and then unsupportive all in one moment. It seems like they could have developed her character better.
