Fake Marriage and the Hitchcock Spoof

I didn't post last week because I had only watched two new movies that week. So this is last week and this week.

Sunday: Tokyo Twilight (1957)

This is a Japanese film. Shukichi is a banker. He had to raise his daughters by himself after his wife abandoned them. Shukichi has done the best he can. His daughters are grown. They are both struggling. Takako fled from her abusive husband with her child back to her father's house. Akiko, the youngest, is a student. She is out late every night and hangs out with the wrong crowd. Then the two women discover their mother is back in town. They both have a hard time with this news. I thought this movie was alright.

Tuesday: Malaya (1949)

During WWII there is a rubber shortage. After returning from Asia a reporter named John tells government officials that he knows where they can get rubber. He will team up with a smuggler to get it out of Malaya. The only problem is the smuggler, Carnahan, is in prison. He is let out to help with the mission. If it is successful he doesn't have to go back. John and Carnahan come up with a plan to work with the navy and a man on the island to smuggle it out. It does not go as they plan but they aren't completely unsuccessful. This movie was alright. James Stewart and Spencer Tracy starred in it.

Sunday: Tokyo Twilight (1953)

This is another Japanese film. Tomi and Shukichi  are in Tokyo to visit their adult children and their families. They don't seem to have time for their parents. They pass them back and forth. The only person who genuinely wants to see them and spend time with them is their son's widow. She takes them around the city. Tomi falls ill and they go home early. Even with everything that happens the children are still eager to get back to their busy lives. This movie was ok.

Monday: To Live and Die in LA (1985)

Secret service men Richard and Jim are trying to take down a money counterfeiter. This is Jim's last mission before he retires. When he is killed Richard is determined to bring down the counterfeiter. He will use any means possible, even if it's against the law. The counterfeiter is Eric, an eccentric criminal and artist. He is clever and dangerous. Richard thinks he can stay one step ahead and take Eric down. I thought this movie was alright. Eric is played by Willem Dafoe. I have never seen him that young.

Wednesday: High Anxiety (1977)

Richard is a psychiatrist. He is very anxious and has a fear of heights. He has become the new administrator of the Psychoneurotic Institute for the Very, Very Nervous. Once there he starts to realize there is something going on with the doctors there. They are covering up something. He goes to a conference in San Francisco. The doctors send a hitman after him. This movie was entertaining. It is a spoof on Hitchcock films. There are lots of good references to his movies. There is the shower scene from Psycho, but instead of being stabbed he is hit with a newspaper by the bellboy. At a park he gets surrounded by birds, like in The Birds, but instead of attacking him they poop on him.

Friday: Morbius (2022)

Michael is a doctor and scientist who suffers from a rare blood disease. He has spent his whole life looking for a cure. Then he starts to research vampire bats and their healing properties. Michael thinks he has found a cure and tries it out on himself. But it goes wrong. He becomes super strong, has super hearing, and has a craving for blood. Michael does his best to control it, but his thirst for blood makes him dangerous. Soon he will have more to worry about. I thought this movie was ok. The CGI wasn't great. Going from man to vampire bat man and back didn't work out. I still found it entertaining enough. There was a twist that I wasn't expecting. Also Matt Smith, who played my favorite Doctor on Doctor Who, is in it.

Saturday: Marry Me (2022)

Kat is a pop superstar. She is set to marry her pop star fiance at their upcoming concert. Charlie is a divorced math teacher trying to connect with his daughter. His work friend ends up with tickets to the concert and brings Charlie and his daughter. Right as Kat is about to go on stage and get married she finds out her fiance cheated on her. On stage she brakes down. She sees Charlie holding a Marry Me sign (name of her song) and says yes. They get married on stage. It's a strange situation. Kat wants to keep up the act that they are married, at least for a while, so she doesn't seem completely crazy. They get to know each other and start to have real feelings towards each other. I thought this movie was cute. I'm not sure that Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson have the best chemistry. But I guess that's kind of the point.

Travel Friends and the Logger's Life

Friday: No Other Choice (2025)         This is a Korean film. Man-su was let go after working at a paper factory for many years. He struggles to find a new job. Without his income his family has to start making cuts. It really starts to wear down on Man-su. There is a position at another paper factory. There are only a few men qualified for the job. Man-su realizes if he eliminates the competition he will get the job. So he eliminates them, permanently. I thought this movie was alright. Weird and violent. The acting is good. Saturday: Merrily We Roll Along (2025)          This is actually a broadway musical that they filmed. It shows the friendship of a lyricist, Frank, a playwright, Charley, and a writer, Mary. The plays starts in the mid 70s. Frank is a big shot in Hollywood. Mary comes to visit him after the success of his most recent movie. Their relationship is strained. He doesn't even talk to Charley anymore. From there the story...

Surprise Chorizo and the Floating Castle

Well after two months I was finally able to go to a restaurant on my list. I went to Tight Tacos, the SE Division location. There is neighborhood parking on the streets behind it, but you might have to drive around a little. It is a small restaurant next to other restaurants and shops. They were only open for take out but there were picnic tables you could sit at on the sidewalk. The tables were in the shade so it was nice on a warm day. From what I could see inside it was clean and modern. There is some color and hanging Christmas lights. The service was good. I got three tacos: chicken, carnitas, and asada. I think that I got chorizo instead of asada. It was actually the best one flavor wise. The carnitas meat was good but there wasn't a lot of flavor. I forgot to ask for no onions so I had to scrape them off. The tacos were good. I would go back. The one problem I had was they serve the food in takeout containers. And they have tables for you to sit ...

King George III and the Abandoned Door

Friday: Fight or Flight (2025)       Lucas is a former secret service agent. He was stranded in Bangkok after a failed assignment. Later he receives a call from his ex who know works at a different agency. A target, only known as Ghost, is getting on a plane headed for the U.S. He is the only one close enough to get on the plane in time. Lucas has to find Ghost and bring them home. Soon he discovers the plane is filled with people wanting to kill both of them. Lucas has to protect Ghost. This movie was ok. Except for the two main actors, all the acting is bad. The writing is bad. It's like they thought they could just put in a bunch of swear words and not have to actually write dialogue. There are some fun moments. It's basically Bullet Train but on a plane. Just watch Bullet Train instead. Saturday: Suzume (2022)       Suzume is a teenage girl living in Japan. One day she meets a mysterious young man, Souta, who is looking for an abandoned place with...
