Sunday: My Life as a Dog (1985)
This is a Swedish film. Ingemar is a young boy growing up with his older brother and single mother in the 50s. His mother becomes very ill. His crazy antics cause his mother even more stress. So he is sent to spend the summer with his aunt and uncle. They work in a glass blowing factory. Ingemar meets some v strange people. A boy with green hair, a man constantly fixing his roof, a girl pretending to be a boy to play soccer, and more. He also learns about women. Ingemar grows up, but still struggles at home. I thought this movie was good.
Monday: Stealing Home (1988)
Billy grew up loving baseball. He had a babysitter, Katie, who was wild but also wise and supportive. They became good friends. Before his senior year of high school tragedy strikes. Billy loses his love of baseball. Years later as an adult he is brought home after Katie dies and he is given her ashes. He has to reevaluate how he wants to live his life, and how Katie would want him to live. This is a good movie, sad but good.
Friday: Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Evelyn is an older Chinese immigrant who runs a laundry mat with her husband. They are being audited by the IRS. Then her husband, Waymond, changes. He tells her he is another Waymond from another universe. There are many universes where one decision changed who Evelyn became. In his world his Evelyn is gone. They are fighting an evil force who is hunting down all the other Evelyns. He needs her help to fight the evil force. They have a way to access the skills of their other selfs. This will help them fight. Evelyn must fight and comes to terms with how her life turned out. This movie is really weird, but it's also good. It reminds me of something Douglas Adams would do.
Saturday: Minamata (2020)
This is based on true events. It takes place in 1971. Gene was a famous photographic journalist. Now he lives alone and struggles to get by. One day after doing a commercial for the money, the Japanese female producer, Aileen, approaches him about a story. There is a town in Japan where the people are suffering from mercury poisoning. A local chemical company has been dumping waste into the lake for years. The people fish from the lake. Aileen wants him to go and take photos to get global exposure of the issue. Gene is reluctant but agrees to do it. He convinces his old boss at Life magazine to fund the trip and print the story. Once in Japan Gene sees how bad it really is. The people are suffering. Children are born deformed and are unable to do things for themselves. Gene and Aileen fight to expose what is going on, along with a local group. The chemical company fights back and hides everything that is happening. I thought this movie was alright. It is sad what happened and is still happening to these people. I mostly watched it because Gene is played by Johnny Depp.
