Monday: Blue Hawaii (1961)
Chad comes back to his hometown in Hawaii after serving in the army. He hides out for a while before seeing his parents. They want him to go into the family business. Chad doesn't want to do that. He rather be free with his friends and go surfing. He realizes that he wants to be a tour guide. Now Chad just has to get his parents to accept how he wants to live his life. This movie was ok. I actually knew quite a few of the songs.
Tuesday: The Woman in Red (1935)
Shelby rides horses for a wealthy woman. At an event she meets a wealthy polo player, Johnny. They fall in love and elope. Johnny takes her back to his family. They are not accepting. Shelby and Johnny decide to start their own business. They will board and train horses. Then Shelby's former boss shows up. So does a man who is in love with Shelby. After strange turn of events Shelby gets involved in a murder case. I thought this movie was ok.
Wednesday: Body Heat (1981)
A small town lawyer in Florida, Ned, meets a married woman named Matty. Despite her warning him to stay away he pursues her. They start an affair. Matty is unhappy with her marriage. If she gets a divorce she gets nothing. So she convinces Ned to help her kill her husband. If only it were that simple. This movie was alright. It is very much a film noir film. Although it is technically neo-noir. This just means any noir film post code. So there is nudity and they actually get away with the crime. But the storyline is very similar to film noir storylines. The script is too. Matty is the femme fatale. And of course there is some good blinds shadows (not sure how to word that). There are some good twists at the end.
Friday: Licorice Pizza (2021)
This movie is set in the 70s. Gary is a teenage actor. He meets a young woman name Alana. Despite saying she is too old to be with him she starts to hang out with him. Gary is ambitious and always coming up with a new way to make money. Whether it's selling water mattresses or running a pinball arcade. Alana is finding herself and not sure what she wants to do. They face many challenges but are always drawn back together. I thought this movie was alright. It just didn't seem to have a real plot. It was just them going from one thing to another. None of the events were really connected. I learned that pinball machines were illegal till the early 70s. People used to gamble on games. Which is weird. I don't associate pinball machines with anything shady. Alana is played by Alana Haim. She is in the band Haim with her two sisters. They were in the movie too, as her sisters. Her parents also played her parents in the movie. I don't listen to Haim but Este (the oldest) does a podcast with Darren Criss. So I know a little about her.
Saturday: The Lost Daughter (2021)
Leda, a British woman, goes on vacation by herself in Greece. There she encounters a loud American family. One of the young women has a little girl. Their relationship reminds Leda of her own relationship with her daughters. Leda is a professor of Italian literature. When her girls were growing up she was a student. She struggled to balance being a mom and a student. Her daughters were very difficult. In the present Leda interacts with the American family. There is something not right about the family. They seem dangerous. Despite that Leda gets in deep with them. This movie was ok. There were a lot of awkward and uncomfortable moments.
Sunday: Judgement at Nuremberg (1961)
Dan is a small town judge brought in to oversee the trail of four Nazi judges in Nuremberg, Germany. He really wants to understand what it was like for them and for the people living in Germany. These judges had to continue to serve justice while Germany was occupied and run by the Nazis. The American prosecutor want them to answer for all the horrible things they seemed to allow to happen. The German defense lawyer argues they were just doing their job. They did what they could for their country during a horrible time. Dan and the other judges on the panel have to decide their fate. This is a good movie. It is based on true events. During the trail everyone wore headphones and translators translated for them. Instead of having subtitles when they were speaking German or have the translator repeat everything they all just spoke in English. But we have to understand that to everyone else they are speaking German. It was an interesting way to deal with them speaking in German that made is easier for the audience.
