Monday: The Misfits (1961)
Roslyn moved to Nevada to get a divorce. Afterwards she isn't sure what to do with her life. She meets an old cowboy, Gay, and his friend Guido. They take her out to the desert. Roslyn struggles to find a purpose in life and falls in love with Gay. The harsh realities of his way of life make her regret her decision to be with him. This movie was ok. I think the relationship between Gay and Roslyn was supposed to be charming, but it's just a creepy old man with a young woman.
Tuesday: Mary, Mary (1963)
Bob is a publisher eager to marry his fiance Tiffany. Before he does he has to clear up some tax issues and finalize his divorce with his wife Mary. Mary has to come back to answer questions about the taxes. While there she meets a movie star who has just given his book to Bob. Mary likes the movie star, but Bob's jealousy over her going out with him makes her rethink things. I thought this movie was alright. I should also say it is a comedy.
Friday: Being the Ricardos (2021)
Lucy and Desi have a wildly successful TV show. Then a story comes out about Lucy being a communist. This could end their careers. Desi tries to get on top of it. Also Lucy starts to suspect Desi is cheating on her. This all affects the show and their relationship. This movie was alright. I'm not sure I buy either of the lead actors being Lucy and Desi. I know you can't ever get a perfect match, but I think they could have done better.
Saturday: Don't Look Up (2021)
Kate is a PhD student studying astronomy. With the help of her professor, Randall, she discovers a massive comet heading to Earth. It would destroy the planet. Despite the data no one wants to do anything about it. No one takes them seriously. The president doesn't think it's an issue. Kate and Randall must go on talk shows to try and spread the word. Still no one wants to do anything about this planet destroying comet. It becomes a political issue with people saying they don't think it's real. This movie was ok. It's by the same director who did Vice and The Big Short. Clearly the president is supposed to be Trump. And I think it's also somewhat about the pandemic. I'm not sure if it is. But it's a major world wide event that could be handled a lot better. It's about everyone's health and safety. It's not a political issue. Update: Ok so it's about global warming not the pandemic. But it still has some similarities as far as people not taking it seriously.
Sunday: The French Dispatch (2021)
An American newspaper based in France is run by a man named Arthur. He has gathered a strange collection of writers to write for his paper. Arthur gives them a lot of freedom in what they write. One reporter rides his bike around the city. His new article compares how the city used to be to how it is now. Another writes about a prisoner in a mental asylum who becomes famous artist. A female reporter covers a youth protest at the university. A food journalist starts by writing a story about the police culinary scene, and end up writing about a kidnapping. All these stories come together to make the newest issue of the French Dispatch. This is a good movie. It is a Wes Anderson film. He has such a specific style that you just know it's his from the moment you see it. All the scenes in the past were in black and white and the scenes in the present were in color. Black and white films seem to be making somewhat of a comeback. Both Belfast and Passing were also in black and white.
