Yesterday I got lunch from a food cart called Jojo. It is on SE Powell. It is in a newer shopping center with a Chipotle, local market, and Dollar Tree. There is plenty of parking. The cart pod in the middle of the shopping center is nice. There are lots of tables and most of them are covered from the sun or rain. Jojo is in the back corner. It is painted a light blue with the logo and other info stenciled on. The service was good. The guys working in the truck give off a party bro attitude, but clearly know what they are doing. I ordered the chicken ranch sandwich and a small order of jojo fries. The jojos are so amazing. They are the best fries in the greater Portland area, if not the whole world. It's been decided. They have spices on them as well as some cheese (I think). They are a bit spicy but not too bad. The sandwich was good too. The fried chicken was cooked really well. The bacon was a little chewy. So every time I took a bit I ended up taking the whole bacon slice with me. So I ended up just taking the bacon off. I am going back there for sure.
Monday: Caged (1950)
Marie ends up in a woman's prison after she becomes an accessory in a theft. Her husband was out of work and desperate for money. He stuck up a general store and she was with him. Her husband was shot and killed and she was sent to prison. Marie is very innocent and timid. Being in prison is a great shock. The guards are corrupt. The other prisoners are hard and cynical. During her time in prison Marie has seen a lot and been treated badly. It changes her. She becomes hard and cynical too. I thought this movie was ok.
Tuesday: The Facts of Life (1960)
A suburban wife named Kitty is bored with her life. Everything stays the same. The same man tells the same jokes at the annual fundraiser. Her husband does the same thing everyday. They are meant to go on vacation with two other couples to Mexico. At the last minute Kitty's husband has a work emergency. So she goes alone. Larry, who is also unhappy with his life, ends up without his wife on the vacation too. The other couple get sick once in Mexico so Kitty and Larry are forced to spend time together. They start off hating each other. But soon hate turns into love. They have a fling. Once they are back at home it's hard to keep it up. They start to think maybe the affair was a mistake. This movie was ok. I think one of the reasons they did not leave their spouses was because the filmmakers didn't want to promote affairs as good things. They wanted to show they were wrong and pointless.
Thursday: Scream (1996)
There is killing spree happening in a suburban town. Teens are killed by a man in a ghost face costume. Sidney is a teenage girl grieving the loss of her mother who was brutally murdered the year before. Her boyfriend Billy has been patient and understanding, but his patience starts to wane. One night the killer calls Sidney and breaks into her house. She escapes. Then Billy shows up. Sidney believes it is Billy who tried to kill her. She goes to stay with a friend. Ghostface continues to terrorize her and the town continuing his killing spree. I thought this movie as ok. I keep hearing people talk about how it is a horror classic. I never gave into it before because I thought it was kinda stupid. And I was right. It just wasn't that well done. I don't know how it's gotten so many sequels.
Friday: The Green Knight (2021)
Gawain is the nephew of King Arthur. He spends most of his time in the pub and the brothel. His dream is to be knight. Despite his family connections he hasn't been given any opportunities. On Christmas he is celebrating with the other nobles. Arthur brings him up to the throne to talk. Gawain has had no adventures, so has no tales to tell. Then a strange figure on a horse appears in the doorway at the end of the hall. In rides the Green Knight. He is made of tree bark. He issues a challenge. He will fight someone and they may cut him. If they win they will gain glory and honor. But in one year's time they have to travel to the green chapel and fight him. He will cut them how they cut him. If they show up and accept it they will continue to have honor and glory. Gawain accepts the challenge. Determined to prove himself he cuts off the head of the knight. The knight picks up his head, reminds Gawain that he has to come to the chapel in a year, and rides off. Gawain realizes what a grave mistake he made. Although he does gain glory he will have to meet the knight and allow his own head to be cut off. A year later with a sense of foreboding he sets off for the chapel facing obstacles along the way. This is a good movie. A little weird at times but good. The cinematography is amazing. The movie is a work of art. It doesn't matter what is happening every shot is beautiful.
Sunday: The Last Duel (2021)
This is based on a true story. After the loss of his first wife to the plague a squire and mighty fighter named Jean marries again. He marries Marguerite, who comes with a hefty dowry. Jean was friends with another squire named Jacques. Jacques will do anything their Lord Pierre tells them to. Jean does not like the Lord and doesn't agree with how he does things. Conflicts arise and they become rivals. Jean has to fight hard for his success while Jacques gets his handed to him. Jacques falls in love with Marguerite. One day when Jean is away he brakes into their home and rapes Marguerite. She tells Jean and they decide to take action. They want to go to trial. Jean wants to settle this with a duel. If he wins it will prove that Marguerite was telling the truth. If he loses she will be killed. This movie was alright. It is told from three different perspectives: Jean's, Jacques', and Marguerite's. While that was an interesting way to do it, it was also repetitive. The acting was good. It was amazing that in that time a woman would have spoken up about being raped. And that her husband would believe her and fought for her.
