Monday: Blood Simple (1984)
Abby is married to a man named Marty who owns a bar. He treats her badly. She starts having an affair with Ray, who works at the bar. Marty starts to suspect she is cheating on him so he hires a private detective. The detective brings him proof that she is cheating. Marty can't stand it. So he rehires the detective to kill Abby and Ray. The detective agrees but has his own plans. He cares more about the money than doing the job. This leads to misunderstandings and chaos. I thought this movie was ok. It is the first Coen brother film. So it's dark but there is some humor in the dark.
Tuesday: Mannequin (1937)
A young couple decide to get married despite not being financially stable. Jessie is desperate to get out of her run down apartment building where she grew up. Eddie has plans to make money. At their reception they meet a ship tycoon, John. John takes an interest in Jessie. Eddie and Jessie struggle to get by. They both work. Although Eddie's schemes never work out and they always end up back at square one. One day Eddie has the idea that Jessie should divorce him and marry John. Then divorce John 6 months later and get a lot of money in the divorce. With the money he and Jessie will be rich. Jessie refuses to do it. They end up getting divorced anyways. John makes his move and starts to woo Jessie. She resists at first but gives in. Their happiness doesn't last for long. I liked this movie. It wasn't the best but I enjoyed it.
Friday: Dear Evan Hansen (2021)
This is based on the musical. Evan is a teenager who struggles with anxiety and depression. He has no friends and has recently broken his arm. Part of his therapy is to write letters to himself. One day he prints one off at the school library. Another loner like him, Connor, signs Evan's cast. Then he takes the letter Evan wrote and runs off. Later Evan finds out Connor killed himself. His parents come to meet Evan. They found his letter on Connor. They think Evan and Connor were friends, and that he wrote the letter to Evan. His name on Evan's cast proves it. Evan goes along with it. He goes to dinner at their house and makes up stories about him and Connor. Then he gets involved with planning the memorial for Connor and starts to hang out with Connor's sister. He gets in deep and doesn't know how to get out of it. I thought it was a good movie. It's sad but has a hopeful ending.
Saturday: Double Feature- Insomnia (2002) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)
Insomnia is about a detective and his partner who are sent to a small town in Alaska to help with a murder investigation. They are partially sent there because they are under investigation for a case they just finished. Will doesn't want to think about it and believes they will be fine. Hap wants to make a deal and tell the truth. The case in Alaska is the murder of a young teenage girl. Will and Hap hit the ground running and get right into the case. It never gets dark in the town during that time of the year. Will can't sleep. His lack of sleep starts to affect how he handles things. The killer calls Will. He knows Will's secrets and threatens to expose them unless Will helps him not get caught. Will is in a tight spot. I thought this movie was good.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage picks up not too long after the first movie ended. Eddie and Venom are struggling to share one body. A serial killer in prison named Cletus wants to talk to Eddie and no one else. He wants Eddie's help and in return he will give him an exclusive story. Eddie finds out something else about Cletus with the help of Venom. He runs with that story. Cletus is sentenced to be executed as a result. He asks to see Eddie one more time before he dies. After a struggle Cletus gets some of Venom in this blood system and then gets his own alien parasite. Eddie and Venom have to stop Cletus before he does too much damage. This movie was ok. I don't know why I expected it to be better than the first one. It's the same, just ok.
Sunday: Supernova (2020)
Sam and Tusker are partners. They are on a road trip through England. Tusker has recently been diagnosed with dementia. They are visiting friends and seeing the country before things start to get too bad. Sam is doing a piano concert at the end of the trip. Tusker plans surprises for the trip. Not all of them are good. This movie was ok. It was slow but not necessarily in a bad way.
