Foster Parents and the Young Woman

Monday: Escape in the Fog (1945)

A nurse serving in WWII, Eileen, is in the San Fransisco area on leave. She has a dream that she is on a bridge on a foggy night and sees a young man killed. She wakes up screaming in her hotel room and two men comes to see if she is ok. One of them is the man from her dream who she had never seen before. Eileen talks to him the next day. His name is Barry. They hit it off. He convinces her to come with him into the city. While there he has to check in with his work. We find out that he is a spy. His boss sends him on a mission to Hong Kong. He is to deliver some very important documents. Barry has to leave that night. He sets out to spend the rest of the day with Eileen. A local clock store owner, who is a spy for the enemy, finds out what is happening. They plan to get the documents. Eileen's premonition comes true but with a different ending. I thought this movie was ok.

Tuesday: Cry of the Werewolf (1944)

Bob's father owns a museum specializing in the supernatural. It was once the home of a wealthy woman. The legend goes that she was a werewolf. She killed her husband and ran off. Bob's father is doing research. He starts to get close to the truth and to discovering the woman's daughter. The daughter, Celeste, is a gypsy princess determined to keep her families' werewolf secret hidden. Bob's father is killed the night before he returns. Police aren't sure what to make of it because there is fur and a woman's footprints. Bob wants to know what his father discovered and find who killed him. This movie was ok.

Wednesday: Room for One More (1952)

Anna is the kind of woman who will take in any stray animal and help those who she can. Her husband George has a hard enough time making enough to take care of their three children. He doesn't want any more mouths to feed. Although he gives in in the end. Anna goes on a tour of a orphanage. She learns that no one wants the older kids. She is interested in adopting or fostering an older kid. The woman who runs the orphanage says she has the perfect child. A troubled teenager who has been abandoned and who was suicidal. Anna says she will think about it. Before she can tell her husband the woman shows up with the girl. Her name is Jane. George isn't happy about it but agrees to let her stay for two weeks. They have problems at first but Anna has a way with Jane. When the two weeks are up it's George who decides she can stay. They foster instead of adopting so they can get assistance. Soon Anna agrees to foster a boy with leg braces. He is defiant and has anger issues. Again Anna works her magic. I really liked this movie.

Friday: Slaughterhouse Rulez (2018)

A British teenager named Don starts at a boarding school in his fifth year called Slaughterhouse. He is roommates with a guy named Wiloughby. Wiloughby's old roommate had committed suicide the year before after being bullied. Don learns about the school and the different houses. He meets Clemsie, who is an Upper Sixth girl. Immediately he is told off for talking to her and told never to approach an Upper Sixth again. The headmaster has a business scheme on the side. He is allowing part of the school grounds to be used for fracking. The fracking opens up a sinkhole. On a weekend when most students are at home, except Don and a few others, something goes wrong at the fracking site. Large creatures come out and start killing people. Don and his friends have to try and defeat the creatures and stay alive. This movie was not very good. I knew it wouldn't be so I'm not sure why I watched it. Other than it was British. It had some good moments, but was pretty ridiculous.

Saturday: Promising Young Woman (2020)

Cassandra is a med school drop out living at home with her parents. She works at a coffee shop. Most nights she goes to clubs and pretends to be so drunk that she can barely walk. Then some "nice guy" will take her home and try to sleep with her when she is seemingly barely conscious. Then she snaps up perfectly sober and asks what they are doing. She catches them almost raping her and calls them out on it. We learn that this happened to her best friend. It is her way to get revenge. One day she reconnects with a guy from med school, Ryan. They hit it off. She wants to take it very slow. Cassandra tries to move on from what happened to her friend. But she can't and goes into high gear to get revenge. She wants to take down everyone involved. This a good movie. Very feminist. The acting was good. It has this very 80's colorful vibe. There is great use of color in this film. The director is a woman named Emerald Fennell. She is also an actress. Her last big role was Camilla on The Crown. She is also one of three woman nominated for a Best Director Golden Globe. Which is exciting. Two would have been a first, so three is even more exciting. And two of them are woman of color. So cool.

Travel Friends and the Logger's Life

Friday: No Other Choice (2025)         This is a Korean film. Man-su was let go after working at a paper factory for many years. He struggles to find a new job. Without his income his family has to start making cuts. It really starts to wear down on Man-su. There is a position at another paper factory. There are only a few men qualified for the job. Man-su realizes if he eliminates the competition he will get the job. So he eliminates them, permanently. I thought this movie was alright. Weird and violent. The acting is good. Saturday: Merrily We Roll Along (2025)          This is actually a broadway musical that they filmed. It shows the friendship of a lyricist, Frank, a playwright, Charley, and a writer, Mary. The plays starts in the mid 70s. Frank is a big shot in Hollywood. Mary comes to visit him after the success of his most recent movie. Their relationship is strained. He doesn't even talk to Charley anymore. From there the story...

Surprise Chorizo and the Floating Castle

Well after two months I was finally able to go to a restaurant on my list. I went to Tight Tacos, the SE Division location. There is neighborhood parking on the streets behind it, but you might have to drive around a little. It is a small restaurant next to other restaurants and shops. They were only open for take out but there were picnic tables you could sit at on the sidewalk. The tables were in the shade so it was nice on a warm day. From what I could see inside it was clean and modern. There is some color and hanging Christmas lights. The service was good. I got three tacos: chicken, carnitas, and asada. I think that I got chorizo instead of asada. It was actually the best one flavor wise. The carnitas meat was good but there wasn't a lot of flavor. I forgot to ask for no onions so I had to scrape them off. The tacos were good. I would go back. The one problem I had was they serve the food in takeout containers. And they have tables for you to sit ...

King George III and the Abandoned Door

Friday: Fight or Flight (2025)       Lucas is a former secret service agent. He was stranded in Bangkok after a failed assignment. Later he receives a call from his ex who know works at a different agency. A target, only known as Ghost, is getting on a plane headed for the U.S. He is the only one close enough to get on the plane in time. Lucas has to find Ghost and bring them home. Soon he discovers the plane is filled with people wanting to kill both of them. Lucas has to protect Ghost. This movie was ok. Except for the two main actors, all the acting is bad. The writing is bad. It's like they thought they could just put in a bunch of swear words and not have to actually write dialogue. There are some fun moments. It's basically Bullet Train but on a plane. Just watch Bullet Train instead. Saturday: Suzume (2022)       Suzume is a teenage girl living in Japan. One day she meets a mysterious young man, Souta, who is looking for an abandoned place with...
