Monday: Two Tickets to Broadway (1951)
Nancy is the star of her small town. She wants to be on Broadway. On her way to New York City she meets three woman who's agent is unreliable. Once in the city she meets another Broadway hopeful, Dan. None of them are having luck getting work. The women's and Dan's agent, Lew, comes up with an idea. He will get Dan and the four women onto Bob Crosby's TV show. And he will get their friends at the local deli to put up the money for it. The group is excited. They start working hard to put together some routines. Only problem is they don't actually have a spot on the show yet. Lew hasn't even been able to talk to anyone from the show. I liked this movie. It is fun.
Tuesday: Paper Moon (1973)
Addie is a young girl who's mother passed away. At the funeral she meets a man, Moses, who reluctantly agrees to take her to her aunt's house in another state. She thinks he could be her father. But he won't admit to it. Pretty soon she learns that he is a con man. Mostly tricking people into buying bibles. Later he pretends she is his daughter to get money from someone. She overhears and demands her part of the money. He had already spent it. So they do some more cons together to get her money back. Addie is actually pretty good at it. She wants to learn from Moses. He is reluctant to have her along. But soon he grows to like her. This is a good movie. I enjoyed it. The actress who played Addie won Best Supporting Actress for her role. She is the youngest to win at age 10.
Friday: The Joy Luck Club (1993)
June's mother has died. Her mom's best friends are there for her and support her. They group formed because they all had similar experiences moving from China to San Fransisco. They call themselves the Joy Luck Club. June didn't have the best relationship with her mom. She didn't understand her. Her mother had left her twin babies on the side of road in China. June later finds out that the twins survived. So she plans to go to China to meet them. The club is throwing a going away party. Most of the movie takes place at the party. Through out the film we learn about each of the women in the club. How their experiences shaped them and how that impacted how they raised their daughters. We also see from the daughter's perspective how each of them grew up and how that made them who they are. This is a good movie. It was fun to see Ming-Na Wen, June, so young.
