Roast Beef and the Boy

Yay for finally going to a restaurant on my list! Well actually it's a market that serves food as well. This week I went to P's and Q's Market. It is on NE Dekum. From what I could figure out online you could order food and then sit on their patio. That's not quite how it turned out. You can't enter the market at all. You have to knock on the door to get someone to come out. They were only serving their deli menu, which only had 4 items. After you order they bring it out wrapped to go. They take payment inside and bring you back your card. There was no shade on the patio. So I ended walking to a nearby park, Woodlawn, and sitting at a picnic table. It was actually very nice in the shade. I got a roast beef sandwich. It was good. The bread was amazing. It had horseradish, which I'm not a fan of. But I still liked it. The service was good. Parking is mostly on side streets. I would go back when they are more open. From what I could see through the windows it was nice inside.

Monday: The Little Hut (1957)
Henry is in a love triangle with his best friend Philip and his wife Susan. Henry loves Susan. She spends a lot of time with him while her husband is away. But mostly she does it to make her husband jealous and to get his attention. Phillip doesn't believe anything will happen so he ignores it. They go on a trip on Phillip's yacht. They get caught in a storm and are shipwrecked on a island. They do their best to survive. Phillip is thriving by being able to invent new devices to help them. Henry struggles with his place in it all. He still wants Susan and believes she wants him. Comedy ensues. I liked this movie alright.

Tuesday: No Way Out (1950)
Luther is a young black doctor. He is the only black doctor at his hospital. His supervisor is very supportive. He wants Luther to succeed. One night Luther is assigned the prisoner ward. Two white criminals brothers come in after being involved in a robbery. Luther is assigned to work on them. They are extremely racist. They don't want Luther treating them. One of the brothers is suffering. Luther does his best to help but the brother ends up dying. The surviving brother claims Luther killed his brother. He soon starts a race riot. Luther is determined to get an autopsy to prove he didn't do anything wrong. He faces obstacles getting it. This is a good movie. This is one of Sidney Poitier's first movies. He did a good job. The brother is so horrible. He doesn't even care about the truth. He just wants Luther to suffer.

Wednesday: Gentlemen Marry Brunettes (1955)
Bonnie and Connie are a sister act living in New York. They aren't having much success. Then they receive a invitation to do a show in Paris. They jump at the chance. It turns out their mother and aunt had an act in the 20s in Paris. They were famous and glamours. Alas they had no talent. One of Bonnie and Connie's new agents worked with their mother and aunt. He tries to replicate the old act. But it is clear from the start that they don't have the same kind of act. Romance and hilarity ensue. I thought this movie was ok. It was supposed to be a sort of sequel to Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. But the only similarities are the it stars Jane Russell and is about a singing duo. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is much better.

Thursday: The First Wives Club (1996)
Three college friends are brought back together in their 50s after their other college friend commits suicide. Their lives are very different. One thing they do have in common is they are all recently divorced or separated, and their ex husbands are with younger women. Elise is an actress who is divorcing her husband who wants half of everything even though she paid for all of it. Brenda struggles to support herself and her son while her ex lives a lavish lifestyle with his young girlfriend. Annie is a people pleaser who doesn't realize her husband, who she is separated from, is using her. The group decide that enough is enough. They want justice for the wrongs done to them. The women work together to take down their husbands. This movie is ok. I thought I had seen it before. But I don't remember most of it. If I did see it, it was when it came out and I was 5. It's weird to have a character have the same name as me. And to have other characters say the name so often.

Friday: Empire of the Sun (1987)
Jim is a young boy living in the British occupied section of China. It is set during WWII. Japan is set to invade China any day. Jim's father doesn't get them out of China until it is too late. Japan invades. On their way out of the city, Jim and his parents are separated. No one seems to notice or care that he is wondering the streets. He tries to go back to his house and wait for his parents. But he runs out of food. So he wonders into the city and ends up with a con man named Basie. Basie takes care of Jim while also trying to see how much money he can make off the kid. They get caught and sent to a concentration camp. Jim is smart and kind. He is able to survive and help others around him. He does jobs for Basie. Basie has promised to take Jim with him when he makes his escape. Things don't go as planned. This is a really good movie. Steven Spielberg directed it. Christian Bale plays Jim. He was so young.
