Tuesday: Throne of Blood (1957)
This is another Japanese film. Two generals coming back from war get lost in the forest near the castle they are going to. There they meet a spirit who haunts the woods. She tells them a prophecy. Washizu will rule the biggest fort. Miki will run the second biggest fort. Later Washizu will be the ruler of the castle for awhile before Miki's son takes it over. Both men don't believe the spirit. But once they reach the castle it all starts to come true. Washizu is satisfied running the fort with his wife. His wife pushes him to be more ambitious. She wants him to rule the castle. Even that isn't enough for her. Her ambition brings disaster. I didn't like this movie as much as The Hidden Fortress. The wife is really creepy. She has these drawn on eyebrows that are almost to her hairline.
Wednesday: Father is a Bachelor (1950)
Johnny is a performer who travels with a professor who sells fake remedies. When the professor is arrested Johnny decides to stay in town until he is released. He plans to just fish and relax. Soon he meets a family of five orphan children (named after the first five months). Their parents died less than a year before. The oldest boy, January, is trying his best to take care of his siblings. But there is only so much a boy can do. Johnny is reluctant to help. He starts by just giving them some fish. Then he ends up buying a new dress for the youngest girl. When the children are discovered by the judge's daughter Johnny quickly pretends to be their uncle. She hold him to it. He gets the kids back in school and starts really taking care of them. It's not long before trouble comes their way. This is a good movie. I enjoyed it. Although unfortunately there is a short scene at the beginning with black face. Which is not good. Luckily it's only at the beginning. When the only info you know about a movie is the short description on the tv guide, it's hard to know that something like that will show up in the movie.
Friday: What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
This is a mock documentary. It is about a group of vampires living as flatmates in modern day New Zealand. We learn a little about each character. Deacon is the youngest. Vladislav is from the medieval times. Viago is the awkward leader who originally came to New Zealand for love. And Petyr is the oldest and scariest. They talk about the struggles of being a vampire in modern life. Like having to be invited in wherever they go. Which limits where they can go. A guy named Nick gets turned by one of the flatmates. He takes it very hard and is not good at keeping their secret. This movie is ok. There were some funny parts. I do like Taika Waititi, Viago, a lot.
Saturday: Psych 2: Lassie Come Home (2020)
Lassiter was shot and suffered a stroke. He is recovering in a care facility. He is convinced that there is something going on at the facility. Shawn and Gus come to help. They have also been secretly working on the case of what happened to Lassiter. This makes them unwelcome when they return to town. They are suspicious of the man who runs the facility. I thought this was a good movie. It is the second movie sequel to the TV show Psych. It is really funny. I forgot how much I love that show. Also the actor who plays Lassiter actually had a stroke in real life. He has been recovering. It was cool to see them incorporate this into the movie so he could still be in it.
Sunday: Short Term 12 (2013)
Grace is a young woman in charge of a treatment facility for troubled kids. She is good at what she does. But she struggles with the hard life she had. A young teen girl comes to the facility who reminds her of herself. A lot of her old struggles come back up. Her boyfriend does his best to help her. Grace has to work through her problems and protect the kids she cares about. This is a good movie. It is a small independent movie, but well done. I saw this movie recommendation on Buzzfeed. There are a lot of actors in this movie who soon went on to do big things. Brie Larson (Captain Marvel, Room), John Gallagher Jr. (Newsroom, Westworld), Rami Malek (Mr. Robot, Bohemian Rhapsody), Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) , Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart), and LaKeith Stanfield (Get Out, Atlanta).
