Tuesday: The Talk of the Town (1942)
Leopold was put in prison for a crime he didn't commit. He escapes and arrives injured at the house of his childhood crush. Nora is reluctant to help him. She tells him he can't stay because someone is renting the house and will be there the next day. Before they can figure out what to do the renter, Professor Lightcap, shows up. He was a day early. Leopold hides in the attic. Nora has to invent a reason to stay the night and prevent Leopold from being discovered. Lightcap is there to write a book on law. He has very strict ideas of how things should be done. Nora talks with Leopold's lawyer who says his best chance is if Lightcap represents him. He will need convincing. So Nora stays on as his cook/assistant. A love triangle forms and Leopold's case becomes more complicated. I liked this movie.
Wednesday: Witness for the Prosecution (1957)
Wilfrid is a lawyer recovering from a health scare with his heart. He is supposed to be taking it easy and not taking any criminal cases. Then his friend shows up with a man named Leonard. Leonard is likely to be arrested for the murder of an older woman. His case becomes more difficult when all the details are revealed. Wilfrid can't resist taking on the case. He knows that the only witness who could help their case would be Leonard's wife. But after speaking with her Wilfrid realizes he can't use her. She is tricky. It's hard to know if she's telling the truth or just saying what they want to hear. Leonard's case goes to trial. Nothing is at it seems. This is a good movie. There is a good twist at the end.
Friday: Earthquake Bird (2019)
Lucy is a translator living in Japan. She moved there to get away from her troubled past. She has a relatively quiet life. Then Lucy meets a photographer named Teiji. Lucy soon becomes his obsession. He constantly wants to take picture of her. Also at this time Lucy meets an American named Lily. Lily is new to Japan. Lucy helps her find a place to live and reluctantly becomes her friend. Lily is a free spirit and manipulative. Later she is believed to be dead and Lucy is a suspect. Her troubled past catches up with her in an unexpected way. I thought this movie was alright. It was interesting but a little weird.
Saturday: Ladies in Lavender (2004)
Two elderly sisters named Ursula and Janet live on the Cornish coast of England. It is the 1930s before WWII. One day the discover a young man has washed up on the beach by their house. They take him in and care for him. He doesn't speak much English. His name is Andrea. They discover he is Polish and that he is a very talented violin player. The sister's teach him English. They want him to be happy, but Janet's protectiveness and Ursula's unhealthy crush almost prevent him from reaching his full potential. I thought this movie was ok. It just wasn't that good. It could have been but something was missing. Also there were these weird slow motion parts that made no sense. Like it slows for a couple seconds as a woman brushes hair behind her ear then goes back to normal. Not sure what they were going for with the slow motion, but it didn't work.
Sunday: Like Father (2018)
Rachel is a workaholic. On her wedding day her estranged father shows up. She is left at the alter. Later she ends up getting drunk with her dad. They wake up the next day on the cruise she was supposed to go on for her honeymoon. Although things get off to a rocky start they end up staying on the cruise. They become close and start to fix their relationship. This is a cute movie. I liked it more than I thought I would.
