Monday: My Man Godfrey (1936)
Irene is a ditzy socialite on a scavenger hunt. One of the items is a forgotten man. She finds a homeless man named Godfrey. Irene convinces him to be her forgotten man for the hunt. He agrees out of curiosity. Irene starts to feel guilty. She decides to hire Godfrey as a butler. Needing the work he takes the job. Irene's family is very eccentric. Godfrey has a lot to get used to, but he is a good butler. Irene starts to fall in love with him, even though it is clear he doesn't like her that way. As time goes on it is clear Godfrey is hiding something. I thought this movie was ok. It's a screwball comedy and I'm not sure if I like those. The character of Irene was really annoying. She talked really fast and wasn't very smart. I just didn't find it that funny.
Tuesday: The Young Philadelphians (1959)
A young woman want to rise in society. Her upper class husband dies before she has the baby. She keeps his last name to help her son. She does her best to help her son climb the social ladder. When he is older her son, Anthony, studies to be a lawyer. After a small accident he meets Joan. She is a well known member of high society because her father is a wealthy lawyer. Although that doesn't matter at first to Anthony. They fall in love. They plan to elope but are discovered. Their parents convince them to wait till Anthony is done with school. There is a misconception about the agreement that drives them apart. Anthony does his best to rise in high society and become a big time lawyer. He doesn't care how it happens. I thought this movie was alright. There are a lot to twists and drama. It feels like a soap opera.
Wednesday: Raffles (1930)
A.J. Raffles is an English gentlemen that leads a double life. He is a wealthy cricket player who is adored by society. But he is also an infamous jewel thief. Although he loves the thrill of stealing jewels he decides to give it up when he falls is love. He wants to start a new life with his fiancé. Then one night a friend comes to him saying he is in debt and will be in danger if he doesn't pay what he owes. Raffles decides to pull one last job to help his friend. His plans go wrong when a gang of thieves are going after the same jewels he is and the police are onto them. Raffles has to change his plans and hope not to get caught. I enjoyed this movie. It's not the best but entertaining. You can tell it's an early talkie (movie with full sound) by some of the action shots. And his fiancé has the looks and style of a silent film star.
Friday: Training Day (2001)
On his first day working narcotics Jake is assigned to work with a senior cop named Alonzo. It is clear from the start that Alonzo isn't going to make this easy. He is wild and harsh. It is also clear that he is a corrupt cop. He drinks on the job and threatens the criminals they come in contact with. Alonzo has connections with several criminals. Jake tries to leave several times but Alonzo always manipulates him into staying. Things become more dangerous when Jakes discovers Alonzo is in trouble and needs to get money fast. Along with some other corrupt cops they do an illegal raid that goes wrong fast. Jake has to decide what his priorities are. This movie is alright. It's amazing that the whole movie takes place in one day. So much happens. For a while your not sure if Alonzo is really corrupt or if it is all for show. Denzel Washington plays Alonzo and won an Oscar for it. Well deserved.
Sunday: Nobody's Fool (1994)
Sully lives in a small town in the northern part of New York. He is irresponsible. His work is in construction but his ongoing feud with the only foreman in town makes it difficult for him to get work. Sully rents the upstairs of a house owned by on older woman. His son comes to town for Thanksgiving with Sully's ex-wife. Sully had walked out on them when his son, Peter, was a kid. Although he only went about five blocks. Their relationship is strained but Peter still wants to connect with his dad. When Sully meets his grandson he starts to take on responsibility. He starts to turn his life around. Sully was always a good man underneath it all but now it it more evident. This is a really good movie. I liked it a lot. Paul Newman was great as Sully.
