This week I went to Blue Star Donuts. I went to the SW Gaines location. The inside is very sleek and modern. The service was really friendly. I went later in the afternoon so there was only 4 kinds left. I got the maple bacon one. It was good. There was a lemony flavor to it. I wouldn't say no to going back. But I still like Voodoo donuts better.
Monday: Random Harvest (1942)
A WWI vet suffers from amnesia and is kept at a mental asylum. One day he escapes and meets an actress named Paula. She takes care of him. They fall in love, get married, and have a baby. Then on a trip to town he gets hit by a cart. He regains his memory. He is Charles, a wealthy business man. But having regained his memory he no longer remembers his wife or the life they had. To Charles the last 3 years are a blank. Paula gets a job as his secretary in hopes that having her around will jog his memory of the time he had with her. She never gives up hope. This is a really good movie. Ronald Colman is Charles. And as always he does a really good job.
Tuesday: The Helen Morgan Story (1957)
This based on a true story. Helen Morgan is an up and coming singer. She meets and falls in love with a gangster named Larry. He tries to help her get noticed by the right people. He even buys her a club for her to perform in. But each time it all goes wrong. Larry is constantly messing things up for her. She does find some success. Helen tries to stay away from Larry but always gets sucked back in. She ends up becoming an alcoholic and losing her fame. This movie was alright.
Wednesday: Born to Dance (1936)
Ted, a sailor, comes into New York City on shore leave. He meets a wannabe Broadway dancer named Nora. They fall for each other. Nora works hard to get to Broadway. A famous actress, Lucy, comes to visit Ted's Navy ship with her dog. The dog falls over board. Ted is the one to rescue it. The actress's agent thinks a romance between them will make good publicity for her upcoming show. So she and Ted pretend to date. But this hurts his relationship with Nora. Lucy also starts to really like him. She wants to call off the publicity stunt but her agent won't let her. Nora gets the part of Lucy's under study. Lucy threatens to quit the show if the stories about her and Ted don't stop. Which would be good news for Nora. In the end it all works out. This movie was ok. This was at a time when MGM required all of their stars under contract to be in a musical. Even if they didn't have any musical talent. Which can be seen in this movie with James Stewart as Ted. He is a good actor but his singing and dancing aren't very good.
Friday: Booksmart (2019)
Amy and Molly are one day away from graduating high school. They are straight A students who have spent high school mostly focused on school. They got into great colleges. Then Molly finds out that her fellow classmates who seem to always be goofing off and that don't seem to care about school, also got into good schools. It makes her rethink her whole high school experience. She and Amy are determined to go to one high school party before they graduate. Most of the movie is them trying to get to the main party but ending up at other parties. Along the way they learn more about their fellow seniors and realize they aren't all that bad. I did not like this movie. A lot of the humor is very crude and vulgar. Or it's really awkward and uncomfortable. There was some actual funny moments. And there were some other good moments. I don't know why I saw it. I wanted to support a female director. But I don't know if that's reason enough when I know I won't like the movie.
Saturday: Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011)
Martha is lost in life. She ends up joining a cult and living with them for two years. She finally escapes and goes to stay with her sister. Her relationship with her sister was already strained before she joined the cult. Now with her new way of thinking there is even more strain. As the movie goes on we learn more and more about how horrible the cult was. Each new flash back reveals something worse than the last one. Martha struggles to make sense of normal life. She is paranoid and anxious. It soon becomes too much for her. This movie was alright. There were seamless transitions between the past and present. She would be sitting under a tree by the cult farm and then you would hear someone ask her to go for a swim. She would turn around and then it is back in the present at her sister's lake house.
