Political Assassins and the Reporter

Monday: Gentleman's Agreement (1947)          Phil is hired by a magazine in New York City. His first assignment is the rise of anti-Semitism. He struggles to find a new take on it. Then his mom suggests that he since he is still new to the city he could just say he is Jewish. Then he will have a first hand experience to the prejudice and discrimination. Phil soon finds out how bad it really is. He has a Jewish friend who challenges him. Telling him that he only has to deal with it for the article. Actual Jewish people have to deal with it constantly. Phil also has a girlfriend who actually suggested the idea for the article. But he finds out that even she has some prejudice. This is a good movie. I haven't seen much about anti-Semitism set in the U.S. Mostly you see it in WWII dramas set in Europe. Tuesday: Suddenly (1954)           This movie is about the president arriving in a small town called Suddenly, CA by train before going ...

Banana Split and the Press Agent

Since my next place was a dessert resturaunt we went to a food cart off my sister's list first for dinner. Both places are on Belmont so it worked out. The food cart is called Herb's Mac and Cheese. It was really good. Then we went to Pied Cow. It is a coffee house with a hookah garden. It is in a old victorian house. We just sat inside. The smoke smell is not bad inside. Unless the windows are open then you smell a little. The decor is a mixture of victorian, Asian/Mediterranean, and art house. There is tiger print wallpaper, a victorian chandelier, and paintings on the walls. It is a little worn down. But I still liked that it was in a victorian house. I got a banana split. I have never had one before. It was good, but I just wish there wasn't coffee ice cream or raspberry sauce in it. My sister got the chocolate fondue. It was good. Other than desserts the only food they have is just snack food like cheese and crackers. Most of the food seems to just be cut...

Postman and the Serial Killer

Monday: The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946)         A drifter named Frank ends up getting a job at a restaurant/ gas station. He gets to know the owner Nick and his young wife Cora. Cora is the classic femme fatale in this film noir movie. She is mysterious and dangerous. She is unhappy in her marriage. She and Frank soon fall in love. Cora knows Nick will never divorce her. She also wants the restaurant for herself. They grow desperate and decide to kill Nick and make it look like an accident. Things do not go as planned. This is a good movie. If your wanting to watch a classic film noir this is it. Tuesday: The Gold Rush (1925)        This is a classic Charlie Chaplin film. His character the Tramp has gone to Alaska to mine gold. He is not prepared for the cold or for surviving in the mountains. He ends up stuck in a cabin with two other gold miners during a long storm. They soon run out of food. The Tramp resorts to eating candles and eve...

Churros and the Fake News

Next on my list was a food cart called Potato Champion. It is on Hawthorne in a food cart pod. (I think that's what you call a place with multiple food carts.) The carts are in a circle with tables in the middle. There is a small fire pit. There are lots of plants surrounding the pod.  I got pulled pork barbecue fries. They were good but spicy. Which is my bad because I was offered honey mustard instead of barbecue sauce. I always seem to forget that barbecue sauce can be very spicy. My sister got two kinds of fries, poutine and PB&J. The PB&J was spicy surprisingly. I would go back. I would just make sure I got something that wasn't spicy.      To cool down after all the spicy food we went to a Mexican dessert cart called Krazy Cups. I got a chocolate milkshake with a churro in it. It was alright. My sister did't really like or eat any of the food. So on the way back to the car we found another food cart pod. This one was very ind...
