This week's restaurant was The Roxy. It is a 24 hour diner. They serve breakfast all day. I'm sure it can get very interesting early in the morning after all the bars have closed. We went at lunch on a Sunday. There was still a decent amount of people in there. It is next to a gay bar, and has decor and things that tie into that. The decorations are very unique. There are barbie dolls dressed as movie stars, leopard print chairs, movie posters, and more. The menu is funny. It is worth reading the whole thing. The service is really friendly. I ordered The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, which is chicken fried steak with eggs and hash browns. It also came with a really good biscuit. The whole meal was good. My sister got Scooby Snax, which is tator tots with cheese and gravy. She also got an Italian soda with sprinkles. She would like everyone to know how much she enjoyed the sprinkles. Also they had a digital juke box. I had not seen one before. They can have any song you want, even something that just came out. I would go back, but during the day again. I'm not into the after bar scene.
Monday: Road to Bali (1952)
This is part of a series of very similar movies. The all start with Road to. The movie stars Bing Crobsy and Bob Hope. This one is about two out of work showbiz performers. They are in Australia but must escape after two women fall in love with both of them. They find work as scuba divers even though they have never done it before. They always seem to be getting in trouble. A guard for a princess hires them and takes them to Bali. The job is to recover some treasure that fell from a ship. No one has been successful because a monster has been killing all the divers. Both men fall for the beautiful princess and she falls for them. Their misadventure continues even after they find the treasure. Most of the movie is slapstick comedy. It was ok.
Tuesday: The Americanization of Emily (1964)
James Garner stars as a navy officer who is assigned with entertaining the generals while in London during World War II. He meets a woman named Emily, played by Julie Andrews. He is a self professed coward who is content not to fight. Emily is a widow who has lost her husband, brother and father in the war. She can't understand his cowardice. Despite their differences they fall in love. He is given a dangerous assignment that puts his life at risk. I liked the movie.
Wednesday: California Suite (1978)
This movie follows four groups of guests staying at the same hotel. The first group is a couple who haven't seen each other since they got a divorce 7 years prior. Their daughter had run away from New York to her dad in California. They must decide whether the daughter will stay. The second group is another couple who are there for the Oscars. The wife is nominated. Her husband has accompanied her even though it is obvious they don't love each as they once had. The third group starts with the husband coming for his nephew's bar mitzvah. His brother hires a hooker for him. She is still there and passed out the next day when his wife comes. He must try and hide his mistake. The last group is two couples on vacation. They are having really bad luck. They were in two car crashes, had to stay in a broken down room, and injure themselves after several mishaps in their room. I don't really see the reason for this last group except maybe comic relief. But it interrupts the other story lines. The other stories are more dramatic so this seems out of place. The movie was ok.
Saturday: Fighting with my Family (2019)
An English family is obsessed with wrestling. They are all involved with the gym they own. The son Zak and the daughter Saraya are both pursuing a career in wrestling. They both get a chance to audition for WWE. Only Saraya makes it. Zak has to deal with his disappointment and figure out what to do with his life. Saraya goes to Florida to train. She struggles to fit in and to keep up. But she is determined to be a Diva wrestler. This is a good movie.
Sunday: Final Portrait (2017)
This movie is about a American writer staying in Paris who befriends the artist Alberto Giacometti. He agrees to sit for Alberto had have his portrait done. The writer believes it will only take two days at the most. Alberto is filled with self doubt and has a short attention span. So what should have taken 2 days takes 20 days. The writer has to reschedule his flight several times. They are both tired and stressed by the whole thing but don't stop. Alberto is a character with all sorts of quirks. I didn't really like this movie. I mostly watched it because Armie Hammer was in it and Stanley Tucci directed and wrote it.
