Lost Gold and the Platonic Marriage

Tuesday: Goodbye Again (1961)          Paula is an interior decorator living in Paris. She has been seeing the same man for several years. He is unfaithful to her, but she still dates him. One day she goes to meet her new American client. She also meets the client's son, Phillip. Phillip is much younger than Paula. He is a lawyer who doesn't take his job very seriously. Phillip starts to have a crush on Paula and makes his intentions known. At first Paula shrugs it off. But soon she becomes fed up with her cheating boyfriend and starts to date Phillip. It can't last. I thought this movie was good. It's actually light hearted for the most part.  Wednesday: The Joker is Wild (1957)       This is based on a true story. Joe is a singer in a speakeasy. He wants to work at another more successful speakeasy. The gangster who owns the speakeasy is not happy about Joe leaving. So he sends men after Joe. Joe is severely injured and can no longer ...

Ricotti and the Singing Fisherwoman

After getting my booster shot I went to Lottie and Zula's for lunch. It is on NE Russell. There is some neighborhood parking but it is a little tricky. I ended up going down a street with a massive truck blocking the road. Luckily there was a spot and when I came back the truck was gone. I think Lottie and Zula's used to be a food truck. Now they have a store front. The front is covered in stickers. There are also some stencil paintings. A lot of it is pretty random. But there is a skull with swirl eyes that is the most used sticker/painting. It is next to the Wonder Ballroom. Which I've heard about but never seen. There is also another food cart near by. There are tables you can sit at in a large open shed with hanging lights. No heaters, so it was cold. It is take out only. They mostly do sandwiches but also serve some breakfast items. The service was good. I got the Ricotti Italian sandwich. It has several italian meats and giardinera (...

India Sweets and the Cover Up

Monday: Navy Blue and Gold (1937)           Three men decide to join the Naval Academy to play football. Dickie is the youngest. He comes from a wealthy Navy family and is a football star. John, nicknamed "Truck", has devoted his whole life to joining the Navy. Rog only joined the Navy in hopes of meeting a wealthy woman, marrying her, and getting a nice job from her father. The three become roommates and fast friends. After seeing a picture of Dickie's sister both Truck and Rog want to ask her out. They get a chance to meet her and she makes an unexpected choice. The men go through the academy growing and learning about life. I thought this movie was alright. James Stewart was Truck. Wednesday: Break of Hearts (1935)         Constance is a young music composer. She is struggling to get any of her songs published or played. She has a friend in her building. He was a well known conductor and has had many students. One is the famous condu...

Moussaka and the Secret Italian Wine

Tuesday I had lunch at Mad Greek Deli. It is a sports bar. It's on E Burnside. There is street parking in the neighborhood behind it. The deli is painted blue on the outside with some greek characters. Inside it is a little dark. There is a counter where you can order. There is some seating to the right with picnic tables. There is also the bar section in the back corner. There are soccer scarves hanging from pretty much every available space on the ceiling. The bar section has a Portland Timbers theme, including a mural on one wall. There are some Greek touches here and there. There is also the lamp from A Christmas Story  behind the bar. It was very quiet on a Tuesday afternoon. To get table service you had to sit in the bar section. I got moussaka. It is layers of eggplant and ground beef. It is topped with a thin layer of mashed potatoes. It also came with some buttered bread. It was good. Nice and warm on a cold day. It was hard...

Female Spies and the 60's Ghost

Happy 3 year anniversary of writing this blog!  Monday: Mona Lisa (1986)          This movie is set in London. After serving time in prison George is released. He immediately tries to get back into his gang and start working again. The only job they will give him is to drive around a call girl. Simone used to work the streets but then figured out how to work in hotels and have higher end clients. George drives her from client to client. They start off hating each other. Then slowly they become friends and George becomes very protective of her. Simone asks for his help to find a young girl she used to work with. This causes trouble for both of them. I thought this movie was alright. George is supposed to be this lovable brute. But he doesn't really grow that much and is still violent and cruel. Tuesday: Mixtape (2021)         Beverly is a lonely middle schooler who is being raised by her grandmother. Her parents had her when they were tee...

Greasy Kalua and the Star-crossed Lovers

Saturday I got lunch at Grindwittryz. It is a Hawaiian place on NE Alberta. There is neighborhood parking, but you might have to drive around a little. It is a small place. There are only 3 booths and some counter space. It is your typical Portland place. Cement floors and fairly modern decor. There are some Hawaiian decorations. Reggae music is playing. There is a big mural on one of the walls with the restaurant name and food items. It is pretty loud in there with everyone in such a small place. The service was good, but staff members were eating behind counter while waiting on customers. Some were just in the back by the kitchen. I got Kalua pig. It comes with rice and mac and cheese. There is A TON of meat. The meat had good flavor. It was sweet and savory. There were some tough pieces that I didn't eat. It was also pretty greasy. Well I'm not sure what they used to cook it but it tasted greasy. I didn't finish it....

Now Chad just has to get his parents to accept how he wants to live his life. This movie was ok. I actually knew quite a few of the songs.  Tuesday: The Woman in Red (1935)           Shelby rides horses for a wealthy woman. At an event she meets a wealthy polo player, Johnny.
