Mr. Whale and the Mermaid

Tuesday: Father's Little Dividend (1951)         This is the sequel to Father of the Bride. Stanley has finally come to terms with his daughter being married. He is starting to really enjoy life. He feels young and ready to take on anything. Then he finds out his daughter is pregnant. Suddenly he has to accept that he will soon be a grandfather. Stanley struggles to be there for his daughter while trying to convince himself he is still young. I thought this movie was alright.  Friday: The Little Mermaid (2023)        The plot is fairly similar to the original. There are even some lines that are the same. The changes are small. Ariel is stronger and more of a hero in this. The actress who plays Ariel did a great job. I liked the diverse casting. It's exciting that little black girls can look at her and see themselves. I had heard they were going to change some lyrics in the song Kiss the Girl to make it less controversial.  Making i...

Anne ends up taking a job at a poorly run hospital. She meets a handsome doctor with big ideas for the hospital. Anne continues to have a rough time with another tragedy and an epidemic. But she and Lucy pull through. I thought this movie was good. Wednesday: Matinee (1993)        Gene is a teenager living on a naval base in Florida. It is around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Everyone is on edge. Gene loves horror films. After seeing a movie with his little brother he finds out a movie producer is going to have a special screening of his new horror film at Gene's local theater. The producer wants to add special effects to the theater, like...

He notices a group of skateboarders hanging at a skate shop. Stevie wants to be part of their group. He trades his brother for a skateboard and starts hanging with the group. They soon take him under their wing. The group is not a good influence but are loyal to him. I thought this movie was alright. Wednesday: The Last Wave (1977)         Strange weather comes to Sydney and the surrounding area. Like a massive thunder storm with huge hail, while the sky is clear and blue. Some say it was a mystical death. David starts to have dreams about the case. He sees one of the suspects before he mee...

Guardians and the Scottish Town

Tuesday: Deathtrap (1982)         Sidney is a famous playwright known for his murder mystery plays. Recently he has had flop after flop. He's becoming desperate. Then he receives a script from a former student. It is a great play. Better than anything Sidney has done in a while. He starts to formulate a plan to steal the play and call it his own. He invites the student to his home. Sidney has to be careful not to tip off the student to his plan as he comes up with the last parts of it. He goes back and forth between trying to kill the student and working with him. You aren't sure which way he will go. I thought this movie was alright. It was fun and has a good twist. Wednesday: Local Hero (1983)        A big oil company from Texas wants to buy a Scottish town that would make a prime drilling spot. They send a man named Mac to negotiate. Little does he know the town is eager to sell. It would help everyone. So both sides have to be careful to...

Pancit Palabok and the Trekkie

I had lunch at a food cart called Baon Kainan on Friday. It is on NE Couch. It is a Filipino food cart. The cart itself is decorated simply. Just black with the logo. There are some picnic tables to sit at. The parking is ok. I got Pancit Palabok. It's a noodle dish with a rich sauce, shrimp, and pork chicharrones. I got it without shrimp and added an egg. I remembered to ask for no onions. I'm proud of myself. It was good. It has the thinnest noodles I've ever had. It's simple yet comforting. The service was good. I would go back.  Tuesday: Superman (1978)        As an alien planet is dying and a couple send their baby in a pod set for Earth. The baby is found by a farmer and his wife. They raise the boy, Clark, as their own. Clark has special powers. Like super speed, flight, and super strength. He has to learn to hide his powers.
