Tuesday: Fruitvale Station (2013)
This is based on a true story. It is about the last day a young man named Oscar lives before being killed. Oscar was a young black man living in he the Bay Area. We learn a little about his past. He had done time in prison and sold drugs. But he was doing his best to turn that around. He spent that day trying to get his job back and helping his mom with the New Years Eve party that was happening that night. Oscar was also trying to be a good father to his little girl and patch things up with his girlfriend. They planned to go into San Fransisco and see the fireworks. To make it easier they decided to ride the train. The ride back was when everything went wrong. I thought this movie was good. It starts out with the real footage of what happened to Oscar. It was the first film by Ryan Coogler who went on to direct the Black Panther and Creed movies. Which also star Michael B. Jordan (Oscar).
Thursday: Weird Science (1985)
Gary and Wyatt are two nerds in high school. They don't fit in and have trouble talking to girls. One night they decided to use Wyatt's super computer to make the perfect woman. It works. Lisa is everything they could ever want in a woman. She pushes them out of their comfort zones. Lisa tries to make them better so they have a good high school experience. This movie was ok. Not the best John Hughes films. Also Robert Downey Jr. plays a bully in it. I'm not used to seeing him so young.
Friday: Not Another Happy Ending (2013)
Jane, a young Scottish woman, was struggling to get her book published. A small publishing company, run by a French man named Tom, decides to sign her for a two book contract. Her first book becomes a hit. Tom and Jane have a falling out. She will only stay as long as it takes to write her second book. She's almost done with it when she gets writer's block. She is Tom's only successful writer. He needs her next book. He figures out she writes best when she's sad, so he tries to mess with her life to make her sad. It all gets very complicated. I thought this movie was alright.
Saturday: Thelma (2024)
Thelma is a 93 year old woman. She falls for a scam believing her grandson is in trouble. She sends the money only to find out her grandson is fine. After the police are no help Thelma decides to get her money back herself. With the help of her friend Ben, they ride around town on his motorized scoot trying to track down the scam artist. This movie is good. It's supposed to be like a indie action film, but with a grandma as the action star. No car chases but motorized scooter chases. Climbing onto a bed or up a lot of stairs is the same as scaling a building. It was inspired by the real grandma of the director/writer of the film.
Sunday: Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (2022)
This takes place in the 80s in Texas. Aristotle is a young Mexican teenager. He is a loner. During the summer he is supposed to take a class to learn how to swim. He refuses to take the class out of embarrassment. While trying to teach himself at the pool he meets Dante, another Mexican teenager. Dante offers to teach him how to swim. They become fast friends. Then Dante has to go away for the school year. They both change. Aristotle becoming a little more confident and outgoing. Dante realizing that he is gay. When Dante returns things have changed between them. Their feelings have changed towards each other. They both have to figure out what that means for them. I thought this movie was ok. The acting wasn't the best. I read the book it's based on.
