Friday: Back to Black (2024)
This is based on a true story. Amy Winehouse had a great voice from a young age. She loved jazz and singers like Billie Holiday. She was discovered by a record label at 19. Amy is successful and a hit. But her record label wants to change her whole act. So she takes some time off. She meets a man named Blake. She falls hard for him. Their relationship is toxic from the beginning. His drug addiction and her growing alcohol addiction only add to it. They are on an off again. She releases another album that does well. Fame and addiction are her downfall. She dies very young. I thought this movie was alright. I wasn't the biggest fan of hers. But she was really popular when I was in high school. It was sad when she died.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Tuesday: Madame Web (2024)
Cassandra is an EMT in New York City. After an accident she starts having visions of the future. She ties it back to her mother who was studying spiders in South America. Spider known for giving people super powers. She starts to see visions of three teenage girls in danger. Cassandra rescues them. She learns that the man who betrayed her mom is still alive. He has seen visions of the girls killing him in the future. So he is going to hunt them down before they get a chance. Cassandra must stop him and protect the girls. This movie is bad. I knew it would be. But I really like Spiderman and there are connections to this story. Although in the comics and not this movie. So I watched it anyways. The script was bad. There is all this build up of Madame Web and three other spiderwomen in the trailers. But there are only brief scenes of that. I guess they figured this movie would set up future movies. It's so bad I doubt that will happen. The acting is pretty bad too. Like they all forgot how to act natural. No teens act how they acted. Also the actress how plays Cassandra is not very good. Not sure how she gets cast in any movie.
Friday: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)
Furiosa grew up in a green place with lots of plants, water, and food. It was well protected and hidden. One day dangerous men find it. Furiosa finds them and tries to stop them. No one can know about where she lives. They end up kidnapping her and taking her to their leader, Dementus. He wants her to lead them to her home. She refuses. Along the way they discover another sanctuary of sorts. Run by Immortal Joe. After laughing at Dementus' attempt to take it over, he ends up taking over Gastown. Furiosa stays and hides. She later becomes a mechanic. Her goal is to escape and get back to her home. I thought this movie was alright. It is really long, or seems that way anyways. Like the other newer Mad Max film it is beautifully shot.
Sunday: The Book of Clarence (2023)
Clarence struggles to get by. No one respects him or believes he will amount to much. He owes money to Jedediah. If he can't repay it he will be killed. Clarence also happens to be in love with Jedediah's sister Varinia. He decides he want to be one of Jesus's apostles like his twin brother. But they reject him because he doesn't believe in God. To prove himself Judas suggests he free slaves. After only being able to free one, Clarence decides to pretend to be a messiah. He gathers a following. Soon he realizes he is doing more harm than good. He only wants to do good. Even though it puts him in danger. This movie was alright. It is a satire. Part of the reason I watched it is because Benedict Cumberbatch is in it. It was a small part, but funny.
