Tuesday: The Big Combo (1955)
A police officer, Leonard, is determined to take down a dangerous mobster called Mr. Brown. It is costing the department too much money to keep going after Brown. After trying to go after Brown's accountant, Leonard makes one more play before being forced to give up the case. He goes after Brown's girlfriend, Susan. Susan ends up in the hospital and Leonard is able to see her. She mentions a name that could crack the case wide open. Leonard has to track the person down. All the while knowing Brown knows he is onto him and has little evidence to take him down. I thought this movie was good. I liked how Brown talked. It was very distinctive. Also there is a cool shot where you don't see one of Brown's goons in the shadows until he lights a match and becomes illuminated by the light.
Wednesday: This Happy Feeling (1958)
Janet is at a party with her boss. She leaves the party early in a storm because her boss is hitting on her. She finds a ride to the train station with a young man named Bill. When he too seems to be hitting on her she gets out of the car and runs away. Janet ends up at the house of an older retired actor, Preston. He takes her in for the night and treats her well. Things get messy when his sometimes girlfriend calls and Janet answers. She pretends to be his secretary. The next day she finds out Bill works for Preston, and is not a creep. Preston ends up actually hiring Janet to be his secretary. Despite their age difference Janet falls for Preston. This movie was alright.
Friday: The Long Game (2023)
This is based on a true story. A Mexican-American man, JB, wants to join his local golf club. They will not let him be a member because he is Mexican. JB soon afters starts his new job as a superintendent at a mostly Latino high school. He learns that if a school's golf team makes it to state they play at the club that rejected him. JB notices five students playing golf on their own course off a highway. They are caddies at the club. JB convinces them to join the golf team. They end up being great players. The team faces many hardships but they pull through. I thought this movie was alright. A good story, just not done that well.
