Alice and the Candlesticks

Tuesday: Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974)

Alice used to be a singer but gave it all up when she married her husband and had a son. Her husband is abusive. He dies in an accident leaving Alice and her son with nothing. She is determined to support herself and her son by being a singer again. They plan to go west to California. On the way they stop in towns so Alice can make money. She ends up in Arizona working as a waitress. She makes friends and meets a nice man. I thought this movie was alright.

Wednesday: The Emperor's Candlesticks (1937)

A Polish secret agent, Stephan, is tasked with taking a letter to the czar of Russia. It is from his son who is being held by Polish nationalists. Before he leaves for Russia he meets up with an old friend. The friend asks Stephan to take a pair of candlesticks to the princess in Russia. The candlesticks have a hidden compartment. Stephan thinks this will be a perfect place for the letter and puts it in one of the candlesticks. Then his friend says he will have the candlesticks delivered to the train station. Stephan agrees only because he can't explain that he has hidden something in them. Olga is a Russian secret agent. Her organization has recently learned the identity of a Polish agent working against them, Stephan. She is to travel to Russia with evidence proving who he is and arrest him. She is also friends with Stephan's friend with the candlesticks. After learning about the secret compartment Olga convinces the friend to let her take the candlesticks. She hides the evidence in one. Later on the train Stephan learns what has happened. They both try to get to the candlesticks. They discover who each other is and it leads to more. This movie was good.

Sunday: Foxfire (1996)

Maddy is a senior in high school. Her biology teacher is well known for sexually harassing female students. One day a drifter, nicknamed Legs, wanders into their classroom. She witnesses the teacher being mean to a girl named Rita. Later after class she learns that multiple girls have problems with him. So Legs, Maddy, and some other girls catch him in the act feeling up Rita in is classroom and beat him up. They threaten him if he ever does that again. After more trouble the girls are all suspended.  They become close friends and help each other out. I thought this movie was ok. It was filmed in Portland. It's one of the few films I've seen filmed in Oregon that actually shows it raining.

Friday: No Other Choice (2025)         This is a Korean film. Man-su was let go after working at a paper factory for many years. He struggles to find a new job. Without his income his family has to start making cuts. It really starts to wear down on Man-su. There is a position at another paper factory. There are only a few men qualified for the job. Man-su realizes if he eliminates the competition he will get the job. So he eliminates them, permanently. I thought this movie was alright. Weird and violent. The acting is good. Saturday: Merrily We Roll Along (2025)          This is actually a broadway musical that they filmed. It shows the friendship of a lyricist, Frank, a playwright, Charley, and a writer, Mary. Surprise Chorizo and the Floating Castle

Well after two months I was finally able to go to a restaurant on my list. I went to Tight Tacos, the SE Division location. There is neighborhood parking on the streets behind it, but you might have to drive around a little. It is a small restaurant next to other restaurants and shops. They were only open for take out but there were picnic tables you could sit at on the sidewalk. The tables were in the shade so it was nice on a warm day. From what I could see inside it was clean and modern. There is some color and hanging Christmas lights. The service was good. I got three tacos: chicken, carnitas, and asada. I think that I got chorizo instead of asada. It was actually the best one flavor wise. The carnitas meat was good but there wasn't a lot of flavor. I forgot to ask for no onions so I had to scrape them off. The tacos were good. I would go back. The one problem I had was they serve the food in takeout containers. And they have tables for you to sit ...

Wolf and the Fake Fiancee

Friday: You. Me & Tuscany (2026)        Anna is a young woman who lost her passion for cooking after her mother passed. She's been housesitting, but it's not enough. One night she meets and Italian man, Matteo. They hit it off and he tells her about his empty villa in Italy that he never uses. Anna takes this as an invitation to use her pre-paid plane ticket and fly to Italy and stay at his empty villa. She gets caught by his family. They assume she is his fiancee and she goes along with it. Anna is introduced to the rest of the family, including Matteo's adopted brother Michael. Michael and Anna immediately hit it off, but can't do anything because she is engaged to his brother. When Matteo shows up things get even more complicated. I thought this movie was alright. It's cute and nice to have a new romantic comedy come out in theaters . It's just a little cheesy and over the top for me. Almost like a Hallmark movie or the like.  Saturday: The Bad Guys...
