Marnie and the Complicated Love

Sunday: When Marnie Was There (2014)

Anna is a young girl who suffers from asthma. She is having a lot of trouble with it recently so her guardian sends her to the countryside to stay with the guardian's relatives. Anna is quiet and would rather be alone to sketch. She explores the town. On the edge of the marsh she sees an abandoned mansion. When she gets a closer look she sees a girl. But then the girl disappears. Anna feels connected to her. Later she sees the girl again. She introduces herself as Marnie. They become fast friends. Anna likes Marnie, but struggles with not always being able to find her. Or understand why the house can be abandoned one moment and full of people the next. Her time there changes her. I thought this was a good movie. It is a Studio Ghibli film. I think Anna suffers from more than just asthma. I think it is more likely anxiety and depression.

Monday: Children of a Lesser God (1986)

A new speech teacher, James, arrives at a school for the deaf on the New England coast. He helps deaf kids be able to speak and lip read. His methods are unconventional but they work. James really connects with his students. On his first day he notices a young deaf woman who is the school janitor, Sarah. He is fascinated by her. She seems to always have a temper. He asks about her and learns that she has been there most of her life. Sarah refuses to learn to speak or read lips. James believes she could be so much more. He tries to help her but she's not interested. Despite arguing all the time they start to fall for each other. And while the relationship mostly works, they have a hard time really connecting. This is a good movie. The actress who plays Sarah, Marlee Matlin, won the Oscar for best actress for this role. She was the first deaf actor to win an Oscar.

Friday: The Lost City (2022)

Loretta is a recluse romance writer. Her latest book centers around the lost city of D. At the beginning of the book tour for her new book she goes to a speaking engagement. The model who is on all the book covers as the male lead, Alan, is also there. When she goes to leave the event she is kidnapped. She is brought to a wealthy man named Abigail Fairfax. He believes that Loretta can help him find the location of the real city of D. He takes her to the island that it is supposed to be on. Alan helps start the rescue for Loretta. He hires a ex special ops like guy to find her. After the failed rescue attempt Alan and Loretta are left to wander the jungle while trying not to get caught by Abigail's men. I thought this movie was alright. Better than I thought it was going to be. There were still a lot of crude jokes, but it was somewhat tolerable.

Saturday: The Vault (2021)

A engineering student, Thom, is recruited to help break into the most secure vault in the world, which is in Spain. Walter has recently found the remains of a sunken ship. On it was gold, and coins that lead to an even bigger treasure. But the Spanish government sweeps in and takes it from him. Claiming it belongs to them. Now he wants to break into the vault to get the coins back. Walter, Thom, and the rest of the team have to find a way to sneak into the vault and get the coins. This movie was alright. They definitely left room for a sequel.

Travel Friends and the Logger's Life

Friday: No Other Choice (2025)         This is a Korean film. Man-su was let go after working at a paper factory for many years. He struggles to find a new job. Without his income his family has to start making cuts. It really starts to wear down on Man-su. There is a position at another paper factory. There are only a few men qualified for the job. Man-su realizes if he eliminates the competition he will get the job. So he eliminates them, permanently. I thought this movie was alright. Weird and violent. The acting is good. Saturday: Merrily We Roll Along (2025)          This is actually a broadway musical that they filmed. It shows the friendship of a lyricist, Frank, a playwright, Charley, and a writer, Mary. The plays starts in the mid 70s. Frank is a big shot in Hollywood. Mary comes to visit him after the success of his most recent movie. Their relationship is strained. He doesn't even talk to Charley anymore. From there the story...

Surprise Chorizo and the Floating Castle

Well after two months I was finally able to go to a restaurant on my list. I went to Tight Tacos, the SE Division location. There is neighborhood parking on the streets behind it, but you might have to drive around a little. It is a small restaurant next to other restaurants and shops. They were only open for take out but there were picnic tables you could sit at on the sidewalk. The tables were in the shade so it was nice on a warm day. From what I could see inside it was clean and modern. There is some color and hanging Christmas lights. The service was good. I got three tacos: chicken, carnitas, and asada. I think that I got chorizo instead of asada. It was actually the best one flavor wise. The carnitas meat was good but there wasn't a lot of flavor. I forgot to ask for no onions so I had to scrape them off. The tacos were good. I would go back. The one problem I had was they serve the food in takeout containers. And they have tables for you to sit ...

King George III and the Abandoned Door

Friday: Fight or Flight (2025)       Lucas is a former secret service agent. He was stranded in Bangkok after a failed assignment. Later he receives a call from his ex who know works at a different agency. A target, only known as Ghost, is getting on a plane headed for the U.S. He is the only one close enough to get on the plane in time. Lucas has to find Ghost and bring them home. Soon he discovers the plane is filled with people wanting to kill both of them. Lucas has to protect Ghost. This movie was ok. Except for the two main actors, all the acting is bad. The writing is bad. It's like they thought they could just put in a bunch of swear words and not have to actually write dialogue. There are some fun moments. It's basically Bullet Train but on a plane. Just watch Bullet Train instead. Saturday: Suzume (2022)       Suzume is a teenage girl living in Japan. One day she meets a mysterious young man, Souta, who is looking for an abandoned place with...
