Moussaka and the Secret Italian Wine

Tuesday I had lunch at Mad Greek Deli. It is a sports bar. It's on E Burnside. There is street parking in the neighborhood behind it. The deli is painted blue on the outside with some greek characters. Inside it is a little dark. There is a counter where you can order. There is some seating to the right with picnic tables. There is also the bar section in the back corner. There are soccer scarves hanging from pretty much every available space on the ceiling. The bar section has a Portland Timbers theme, including a mural on one wall. There are some Greek touches here and there. There is also the lamp from A Christmas Story  behind the bar. It was very quiet on a Tuesday afternoon. To get table service you had to sit in the bar section. I got moussaka. It is layers of eggplant and ground beef. It is topped with a thin layer of mashed potatoes. It also came with some buttered bread. It was good. Nice and warm on a cold day. It was hard...

Female Spies and the 60's Ghost

Happy 3 year anniversary of writing this blog!  Monday: Mona Lisa (1986)          This movie is set in London. After serving time in prison George is released. He immediately tries to get back into his gang and start working again. The only job they will give him is to drive around a call girl. Simone used to work the streets but then figured out how to work in hotels and have higher end clients. George drives her from client to client. They start off hating each other. Then slowly they become friends and George becomes very protective of her. Simone asks for his help to find a young girl she used to work with. This causes trouble for both of them. I thought this movie was alright. George is supposed to be this lovable brute. But he doesn't really grow that much and is still violent and cruel. Tuesday: Mixtape (2021)         Beverly is a lonely middle schooler who is being raised by her grandmother. Her parents had her when they were tee...

Greasy Kalua and the Star-crossed Lovers

Saturday I got lunch at Grindwittryz. It is a Hawaiian place on NE Alberta. There is neighborhood parking, but you might have to drive around a little. It is a small place. There are only 3 booths and some counter space. It is your typical Portland place. Cement floors and fairly modern decor. There are some Hawaiian decorations. Reggae music is playing. There is a big mural on one of the walls with the restaurant name and food items. It is pretty loud in there with everyone in such a small place. The service was good, but staff members were eating behind counter while waiting on customers. Some were just in the back by the kitchen. I got Kalua pig. It comes with rice and mac and cheese. There is A TON of meat. The meat had good flavor. It was sweet and savory. There were some tough pieces that I didn't eat. It was also pretty greasy. Well I'm not sure what they used to cook it but it tasted greasy. I didn't finish it....

Nuremberg and the Teen Entrepreneur

Monday: Blue Hawaii (1961)           Chad comes back to his hometown in Hawaii after serving in the army. He hides out for a while before seeing his parents. They want him to go into the family business. Chad doesn't want to do that. He rather be free with his friends and go surfing. He realizes that he wants to be a tour guide. Now Chad just has to get his parents to accept how he wants to live his life. This movie was ok. I actually knew quite a few of the songs.  Tuesday: The Woman in Red (1935)           Shelby rides horses for a wealthy woman. At an event she meets a wealthy polo player, Johnny. They fall in love and elope. Johnny takes her back to his family. They are not accepting. Shelby and Johnny decide to start their own business. They will board and train horses. Lucy and the Parisian Kansas Newspaper

Monday: The Misfits (1961)           Roslyn moved to Nevada to get a divorce. Afterwards she isn't sure what to do with her life. She meets an old cowboy, Gay, and his friend Guido. They take her out to the desert. Roslyn struggles to find a purpose in life and falls in love with Gay. The harsh realities of his way of life make her regret her decision to be with him. This movie was ok. I think the relationship between Gay and Roslyn was supposed to be charming, but it's just a creepy old man with a young woman.  Tuesday: Mary, Mary (1963)          Bob is a publisher eager to marry his fiance Tiffany. Before he does he has to clear up some tax issues and finalize his divorce with his wife Mary. Mary has to come back to answer questions about the taxes. While there she meets a movie star who has just given his book to Bob. Mary likes the movie star, but Bob's jealousy over her going out with him makes her rethink things. I thoug...
