Chana Aloo and the Magpie

On Sunday I got lunch from a food cart called Bake on the Run. It is part of the Hawthorne Asylum food cart pod on SE Madison. The parking is ok. There is a pay to park lot by Nicholas which is across the street. This is the first time I've actually got anything from this pod. But I have walked around it before. Bake on the Run's cart is more like a small house. It has red wood paneling and wooden steps. The food is Guyanese (South American). There is a lot of info about the food and country on the sides of the window. The service was ok. The guy taking my order wasn't the most knowledgeable about the menu. But the food was made pretty quickly. I got a bacalhau (Portuguese salted cod) omelet bake. So it's the fish and eggs in a fried bread pocket. Almost like pita but a little thinner. I also got a chana aloo (chickpea potato curry) bake, which is also in a bread pocket. The fish one was good. The chickpea one was really good. It was a tad spicy ...

Shakshuka and the Green Dolphin

A bunch of new restaurants opened near my house. Most have locations in Portland as well. Sunday we had brunch at Tasty. They brought that Portland industrial design to Lake Oswego. It is sleek and modern. There are these cool modern Edison bulb chandeliers. Everything is served family style. But we mostly just all ate our own dish. The biscuits with the honey butter are amazing. I got Shakshuka with feta and merguez (lamb sausage). It is a poached egg, tomato, onion and pepper stew. It is a Middle Easter/ North African dish. I have seen pictures of it before but have never tried it. It was good. It takes a while to cool down because of the way they cook it. Which I didn't like so much. It was kinda loud inside but not too bad. They had good music. The service was good. There is plenty of parking in the garage. I would go back. Maybe try their dinner menu. Guy and the Convict's Island

Monday: When Were You Born (1938)          Mei Lei travels on a ship back to San Fransisco. She is an astrology expert and often does readings for people. On the ship she predicts that a man will die in two days. Later she is proven right. He is murdered. The police question her. They are skeptical of astrology in the beginning but she gives them insight they wouldn't have gotten otherwise. So they agree to let her read each of the people they question to learn what she can about them from their sign. Her insight helps solve the case. I thought this movie was ok. The writing wasn't the best. Even so Anna May Wong, Mei Lei, acts circles around everyone else. Tuesday: High Wall (1947)          A man has killed his wife but he has no memory of doing it. He is admitted to the psych ward. They discover that he has brain damage which could have caused his violent behavior. His doctor is not convinced that he did commit the murder. He wan...

Bookstore Pen Pals and the Giant Starfish

Monday: Edge of the City (1957)           Axel is on the run. He ends up in New York City. At the docks he gives the name of an acquaintance and gets a job. His crew leader is a bully that Axel doesn't get along with. Axel is a bit of a loner. Despite that he soon becomes friends with a black man named Tommy. Tommy takes Axel under his wing and brings him on to his crew. The two men grow close. Axel reveals more about his past and why he is on the run. Axel's past comes for him. Not long after that his old crew leader, who is racist, has had enough of working with a black man at the same level. He starts a fight that changes everything. I thought this was a good movie. Sidney Poitier plays the charming and supportive Tommy. Tuesday: Pal Joey (1957)          Joey is on the search for a club to sing in. He finds a burlesque club down on their luck. He convinces the owner to hire him as an MC and performer. Joey is a ladies man. All t...

Secret Letters and the Cruise

Tuesday: The Last of Sheila (1973)              Clinton's wife was killed in a hit and run after a party. A year later he invites his friends on vacation on a yacht off the French coast line. He suspects each of them of being the one who killed his wife. Clinton loves to play games and has created a game for the whole trip. Each guest is given a card with a secret on it. They have to find out who's secret it is by the end of the week. Each day they have a challenge where they can figure out who belongs to one of the secrets. He hopes this will help him find the killer. Not too far into the week it takes an unexpected turn. I liked this movie. It was a twist on your normal guests in a house murder mystery. Wednesday: The Big Heat (1953)         A cop commits suicide. Dave, another cop is assigned to the case. He soon starts to realize there might be more behind the suicide. The town is run by a mob. Many police and politicians ...
