Tuesday: If Winter Comes (1947)
Mark is a textbook writer who lives in a small English town with his wife Mabel. He married her after is true love, Nona, married someone else. Then Nona moves back to town with her husband. Her being back complicates things. It's not helped by the fact that Mabel and Mark's boss both know of their relationship. World War II starts. Nona's husband is called up to fight. She joins the fight to get away. Mark is forced to stay home because of a heart condition. He befriends a young woman named Effie. She later comes to him when she finds out she is pregnant. Mark helps her, but rumors start to go around about the two of them. More drama ensues. I thought this movie was alright. It is definitely a melodrama. There is constant drama and it's just a bit much.
Friday: Snake Eyes (2021)
As a young boy Snake Eyes sees his father be killed. He takes the name Snake Eyes after that roll of the dice is what got his father killed. He is left alone in the world. Snake becomes a fighter who makes money in cage matches. One day he is approached by a man who is the head of a gang. He wants Snake to join him. Snake befriends another gang member named Tommy. Tommy is soon outed as a spy for a clan. Snake is ordered to kill Tommy. He doesn't do it and ends up on the run with Tommy. To thank Snake Tommy brings him to his home in Japan. Tommy is going to be the head of the clan and wants a warrior like Snake. But first Snake must pass three trials. Snake might have other motives. This movie was ok. The acting and the fight scenes weren't that great. I like Henry Golding who plays Snake Eyes. But it's like he was concentrating so hard on his American accent that he forgot how to act. This is based on the G.I. Joe character.
Saturday: Gunpowder Milkshake (2021)
Sam was raised by her mom and a group of assassins who work for a group called The Firm. They work in a library where they hide and clean hot weapons. Sam's mom disappeared when she was a teenager. Sam has had to raise herself. She has become a dangerous and skilled assassin. But then she kills the wrong person which puts her in trouble with The Firm. Then on a job she is supposed to kill a man who had stolen from the Firm. Sam finds out he only did this because they were holding his daughter for ransom. In a struggle for the gun she accidentally shoots him. She takes him to the hospital and then goes to get his daughter. It doesn't go as planned. Now she has the kidnappers and the Firm's thugs after her. She goes to the librarians for help. I thought this movie was good. It was well done. It's very stylized in the way the characters talk and the sets. There is a lot of bright colors and neon lights. It's almost techno noir.
Sunday: The Dig (2021)
Basil is an excavator in England. He is hired to come to a wealthy widow's property and see what could be there. Edith owns land with big mounds on it. It's believed there is something buried under the mounds. Basil agrees to work for her. They discover a ship that is older than the time of the Vikings. The British Museum hears of the find and takes over. Basil is able to stay on. Edith is determined to discover what was buried even when her health starts to fail. I thought this was a good movie. It is a little slow but it picks up near the end.
