Monday: The Black Stallion (1979)
Alec is a young boy traveling home on a ship with his dad. He discovers a wild and untamed black stallion on board. Although it is dangerous he can't help but be curious. Tragedy strikes when the boat catches on fire. Alec is thrown overboard. He wakes up on a deserted island. The only other living creature there is the stallion. Alec and the horse become friends. Later they are rescued and brought back home. Alec has no room for Black, as he calls the horse, at his house. Black runs away and ends up at the farm of a former racehorse jockey. The jockey, Henry, allows Black to stay at his farm. Alec wants to race Black. Henry is not sure it can be done with a wild horse. They decide to go ahead anyways. I liked this movie. There are some beautiful shots when they are on the island together. Just a boy and his horse running free.
Tuesday: Night Must Fall (1937)
Olivia lives with her rich aunt in a house far from town. Soon they find out that a young woman was killed in the woods just outside their house. Not long after the aunt hires a young man to help around the house. He has charmed the aunt. But Olivia soon becomes suspicious. There is something not right about the man. I thought thought this movie was good.
Wednesday: Capote (2005)
This movie follows Truman Capote as he writes his book In Cold Blood. A family in Kansas is murdered. Capote is fascinated by the story. He wants to write an article. He flies to Kansas to do research and talk to the local people. Later he is able to talk to the two suspects. Capote realizes that there is way more to this story. So he decides to write a book instead. He forms a strange relationship with one of the suspects. They becomes friends. At the same time Capote only cares about getting the story. He still wants the suspects to hang. I thought this movie as ok. There was just something missing.
Friday: Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
Sonic has to escape from his home world because evil forces are after his power. He is able to travel to different worlds through magical rings. Sonic ends up on Earth in Montana. He is lonely and spends time observing the locals. He especially likes the a cop named Tom. Sonic's power is detected. A government agent, Dr. Robonik, is sent to track him down. Sonic hides at Tom's house. Tom discovers him and reluctantly agrees to help him. This movie was better than I thought it was going to be. But still not great. There weren't a lot of choices this past weekend. It was this, a sappy romance, or a horror film. I wasn't in the mood for a romance film. Dolittle was also an option. But my mom saw it and said it was really bad. My mom is very lenient with movies. There are a lot that I think are bad that she thought were enjoyable. So if she says something is bad, it's really bad. Also I enjoyed the pop culture references in this movie.
Saturday: Ad Astra (2019)
Roy is an astronaut. He was working on the outside of the space station when an electrical surge knocks him off it. He falls back to earth. Miraculously he survives. Later he is summoned to a top secret meeting. His superiors talk to him about his father. His father was on a mission to discover different forms of life in the universe. His mission took him all the way to Neptune. His father never returned. They believes Roy's father's ship is where the electric shocks are coming from. Roy is sent on a mission to discover if his dad is still alive and to put a stop to the electric shocks. I thought this movie was ok. It was interesting. But it's one of those movies you are glad you didn't pay to see in theaters. There was a car chase on the moon. With the gravity being so different everything is in slow motion. It was an interesting take on the classic car chase.
Sunday: Romantic Comedy Double feature: The Thing About Harry (2020) and To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You (2020)
The Thing About Harry is about a guy named Sam. His is forced to travel home with his former bully, Harry. He discovers that Harry was only mean to him because he was jealous that Sam was out in high school. Harry didn't have the courage to do that in high school. Sam starts to think that this could be something. Then Harry gets back with his girlfriend. Sam and Harry keep running into each other. They like each other but something always draws them apart. Sam just wants to be friends, but it could lead to something more. This movie is cute. A twist on When Harry Met Sally. The quality just wasn't that good. A cool concept but it just fell a little flat.
To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You starts where the last movie left off. Lara Jean and Peter finally dating for real. Although she is happy, Lara Jean can't help but be insecure about their relationship. This is all new to her, but Peter has done it all before with his other girlfriend. Lara Jean gets a reply to one of her letters. It is from John Ambrose. They were friends in middle school. He was her other serious crush. Just by coincidence they end up volunteering at the same retirement home after she gets the letter. Lara Jean starts to having feelings for John Ambrose. She is confused about what to do. This movie was also cute. I liked it better then The Thing About Harry. But it still wasn't that good.
