Alabama Lawyer and the Family Hire

It has been exactly a year since I started this blog. I have long since finished my original list of restaurants. At least the ones in Oregon. But I have continued to add more. It has been a fun experience. I have enjoyed going to all these different restaurants. I don't always like the food, but it is still fun to explore. I now know I do not like Russian food. Indian food will always be too spicy. Restaurants in Victorian houses are always enjoyable, even if it's just being in the house. The places that stand out are Khun Pic's Bahn Thai, TarBoush, The Roxy, and Memoz. Exploring different parts of Portland has also been fun. I've seen a lot of great movies as well. I am going to continue to do this blog. To another year of exploring food and movies.

Monday: A Little Romance (1979)
Lauren is an American teenager living in Paris. She meets a French teenage boy named Daniel. Daniel is obsessed with movies, especially American ones. Lauren and Daniel have a lot of fun together. They meet an old man named Julius. He tells them great stories about his life. Lauren's mom is not happy about her seeing Daniel. Soon Lauren finds out they are moving back to the states. She doesn't want to go. With the help of Julius, she and Daniel runaway to Venice. I liked this movie. It is good. Diane Lane is Lauren. She is so young in this movie.

Tuesday: Parasite (2019)
Here is another foreign film nominated for best picture. This movie is about a South Korean family who are down on their luck. Ki-woo is the son of the family. His friend is going to live abroad. He offers Ki-woo his old job as a tutor for a rich family's daughter. The family hires him. The mother of the rich family is naive. Ki-woo is able to convince her to hire a art teacher he knows for the little boy. The teacher is his sister. They soon make it so their father is hired as the driver and their mother as the housekeeper. With all of them being employed things are looking up. But soon things take a dark turn. This is a really good movie. I can see why it is getting all the award attention. After watching this movie I have now seen all the movies nominated for best picture.

Wednesday: A Stolen Life (1946)
Kate is a painter. She travels home to Nantucket. On the way she meets a lighthouse operator named Bill. They hit it off and start to see each other. Then Kate's twin sister, Pat, returns home. She plays a trick on Bill and pretends to be Kate on their date. Kate discovers them and Bill is embarrassed. From then on it is never the same between Kate and Bill. At a dance she catches him kissing Pat. Although she is saddened by it, it seems Bill loves Pat and not her. So she does her best to move on. After Bill and Pat are married Kate leaves the island to get back to her painting. Later when she visits home again Pat tries to reconnect with her. They go sailing. They get stuck in a storm and Pat dies. Kate is mistaken for Pat. She doesn't correct them and pretends to be Pat. That way she can be married to Bill, who she believes always really loved her. This movie was ok. The movie Dead Ringer is a remake of this movie. It is interesting because Bette Davis stars in both. I don't know of many stars who star in the remake, in essentially the same role.

Friday: Just Mercy (2020)
This is based on a true story. Bryan is a young black lawyer who moves to Alabama to defend prisoners on death row. Most of whom have been wrongfully accused. Bryan is met with resistance from both the local people as well as the prisoners. His main case is a black man named Walter. Walter was accused of killing a white woman. He is innocent. Bryan discovers that there is very little evidence to connect Walter to the crime. He believes he can help get Walter out of prison. After some convincing Walter agrees to try. They both face a lot of resistance. This is a good movie. The acting is really good.

Saturday: The Laundromat (2019)
Ellen is on a pleasure cruise with her husband when the boat capsizes. Most of the passengers die including her husband. Ellen has difficulties getting the insurance money. She discovers that the insurance company for the boat is not real. It is all tied up in shell company. She does her best to try and figure out how this could happen. She wants to expose the company. There are two other stories of a business man threatened when he plans to expose his partner as owning a shell company, and a rich man who gives his daughter a company that is a shell. We also follow two men who run a firm that owns thousands of shell companies. They are very rich, but they become exposed. This movie was ok. It is very much in the style of The Big Short. It has the characters explain all ins and outs of finance and shell companies. I'm still a little confused.

Travel Friends and the Logger's Life

Friday: No Other Choice (2025)         This is a Korean film. Man-su was let go after working at a paper factory for many years. He struggles to find a new job. Without his income his family has to start making cuts. It really starts to wear down on Man-su. There is a position at another paper factory. There are only a few men qualified for the job. Man-su realizes if he eliminates the competition he will get the job. So he eliminates them, permanently. I thought this movie was alright. Weird and violent. The acting is good. Saturday: Merrily We Roll Along (2025)          This is actually a broadway musical that they filmed. It shows the friendship of a lyricist, Frank, a playwright, Charley, and a writer, Mary. The plays starts in the mid 70s. Frank is a big shot in Hollywood. Mary comes to visit him after the success of his most recent movie. Their relationship is strained. He doesn't even talk to Charley anymore. From there the story...

Surprise Chorizo and the Floating Castle

Well after two months I was finally able to go to a restaurant on my list. I went to Tight Tacos, the SE Division location. There is neighborhood parking on the streets behind it, but you might have to drive around a little. It is a small restaurant next to other restaurants and shops. They were only open for take out but there were picnic tables you could sit at on the sidewalk. The tables were in the shade so it was nice on a warm day. From what I could see inside it was clean and modern. There is some color and hanging Christmas lights. The service was good. I got three tacos: chicken, carnitas, and asada. I think that I got chorizo instead of asada. It was actually the best one flavor wise. The carnitas meat was good but there wasn't a lot of flavor. I forgot to ask for no onions so I had to scrape them off. The tacos were good. I would go back. The one problem I had was they serve the food in takeout containers. And they have tables for you to sit ...

King George III and the Abandoned Door

Friday: Fight or Flight (2025)       Lucas is a former secret service agent. He was stranded in Bangkok after a failed assignment. Later he receives a call from his ex who know works at a different agency. A target, only known as Ghost, is getting on a plane headed for the U.S. He is the only one close enough to get on the plane in time. Lucas has to find Ghost and bring them home. Soon he discovers the plane is filled with people wanting to kill both of them. Lucas has to protect Ghost. This movie was ok. Except for the two main actors, all the acting is bad. The writing is bad. It's like they thought they could just put in a bunch of swear words and not have to actually write dialogue. There are some fun moments. It's basically Bullet Train but on a plane. Just watch Bullet Train instead. Saturday: Suzume (2022)       Suzume is a teenage girl living in Japan. One day she meets a mysterious young man, Souta, who is looking for an abandoned place with...
