Giant Burrito and the Underground Railroad

This was the first time I have gone to a restaurant by myself. Or at least one where you are seated and order from a menu. I've been to places like Qudoba and Cafe Yumm by myself. This week I went to Mi Pueblo. It is on SE Fuller, close to Clackamas. Technically it's Portland. It is small and in a shopping mall. It is your typical Mexican place. It is very colorful. There are paintings on the tables. The back of the seats of the booths are also painted with small murals. It was the last day of Dia de Los Muertos so there was still a lot of decorations up. Lots of sugar skulls. There was even an ofrenda. An ofrenda is usually a table with pictures of loved ones who have passed away. The belief is that if their photo is on display they can come from the spirit world  during the holiday and spend time with their family. Usually there is an offering of food. I have learned about ofrendas in school and in Coco, but I had never seen one in real life. I got the pueblo burrito with carnitas. It was huge. But it was good. I liked it. The service was good. I would go back.

Monday: Bewitched (1945)
Joan is a normal woman who is engaged to a man named Bob. Then she starts hearing a voice in her head. The voice is telling her to do evil things. Joan has another personality named Karen. Karen doesn't like Joan's life or Bob. She threatens to come out and be violent. To appease her Joan agrees to run away. In a new city Joan is able to live a normal life again. Karen leaves her alone. She meets a man named Eric. She starts to like him. But then Bob finds her and takes her home to get help. Karen likes Eric. She again threatens to do violent things. Joan works with a doctor to fix her problem. This movie is ok. It's clearly a tv movie. It just scratches the surface of what multiple personality disorder is like. The beginning feels like the twilight zone series. The way they introduce Joan and what she is going through.

Tuesday: Belladonna of Sadness (1973)
This is a Japanese animated film. It is about a woman named Jeanne. She marries a man named Jean. They go to ask permission from the lord of the land to get married. He declines and has Jean beat up. Jeanne is raped. When she gets home a little ghost like creature talks to her. He says he can help her. She wants a better job for Jean. Soon he gains a high position in the town. For a while life is good. But soon things go bad again. She makes another deal and another but it never seems to last. The ghost grows bigger. It turns out the ghost is the devil and Jeanne now belongs to him. I didn't like this movie. It is really weird. Don't watch it. What is interesting is the style of animation. It is more like water color drawings with a voice over. There is very little movement. Maybe someone walking or someone's head moving back and forth.

Wednesday: Rose-Marie (1936)
Marie is a opera singer. She finds out that her brother has escaped from jail. Marie wants to find him and help him. She has to travel through the mountains with a Native American guide. In a small town she meets a mountie named Bruce. He is ordered to find her brother and arrest him. Marie's guide abandons her. She invents a story about a fishing trip when Bruce offers to help her. They travel together. Marie and Bruce fall in love. She feels guilty about lying about why she's really there in the mountains. I liked this movie ok. There was a lot of overacting. It is a musical. But the songs are more operatic. Which I don't like. I need to stop watching musicals with opera in it.

Thursday: The Wolf Man (1941)
Larry goes home to the small village he grew up in. He starts hearing legends about werewolves. He doesn't believe it. Larry meets a shop girl named Gwen. He pursues her even though she is engaged. They go to see a gypsy fortune teller with Gwen's friend. But it all goes wrong when the fortune teller, who is a werewolf, marks the friend as his next victim. Larry and the women run. But the werewolf kills the friend. Larry kills the wolf, but gets bitten. He gets turned into a werewolf. Larry doesn't want to hurt anyone but he can't control it. This is a good movie. I've now seen all but one of the classic Universal horror films. I also liked that Bela Lugosi (original Dracula) was in it as the fortune teller.

Friday: Harriet (2019)
Minty is a slave. She wants to be freed so she and her husband, who is a free, can live somewhere else. The slave owner had made a deal with her mother that meant that Minty and her sister's would never be slaves. So they should have been free this whole time. The slave owner denies every making that deal. They decide to sell Minty. Minty plans to run away with her husband. But she doesn't want to risk his freedom so she leaves him behind. The slave owner's son Gideon chases her. She loses him by jumping in to a river. After a long journey she makes it to Philadelphia. She gets help from a man named William Still. He sets her up in a boarding house. The house's owner, Marie, helps her adjust to being free. Minty changes her named to Harriet Tubman. Harriet wants to go back and free her family. No one will help her so she's does it on her own. This starts a long career of freeing slaves. This is a really good movie. Harriet Tubman was an amazing woman. She was so strong and did so much.

Saturday: Motherless Brooklyn (2019)
Lionel works for a private detective. He has tourettes. No else wants to work with him but the private detective, Frank, takes Lionel under his wing and helps him. Lionel is very smart and has an amazing memory. Frank gets caught up in something and is killed. Lionel works to figure out what Frank was into. He discovers a black woman named Laura, who is some how at the center of it all. She works for a housing committee. Neighborhoods are being turned into slums. The residents are forced to move out but are never relocated. The neighborhoods are being torn down to make way for new buildings. Lionel discovers that somehow the building commissioner, Moses, is involved. He has to figure out how all this is connected. This is a good movie. It is techo noir. It was interesting to see a movie about someone with tourettes.
