Diner Food and the Stolen Painting

The restaurant we went to this week is a diner called Jim Dandy. It is on NE Sandy Blvd. It has been there since 1937. It still looks like it originally did on the outside. The inside is slightly updated. But there are still the diner booths and all that. The food is classic diner food, burgers and milkshakes. They have a lot of milkshake flavors. I got chicken strips and fries. It was fine. Not great but not horrible. There is a lot of Portland memorabilia. Old photos of the coast from the 20s and 40s. Pages of the Oregonian from the beginning and end of WWII, and so much more. Most of that is in the back room. The front room has memorabilia from the 50s. Lots of Elvis and Marilyn Monroe. The service was good. I would go back and try a milkshake.

Wednesday: Good News (1947)
This is a musical about a college senior class that don't want to leave college. Pat is a new student. She loves speaking in French (usually incorrectly). Immediately all the boys want to date her. All she cares about is money. She goes for the guy who she is told has the most money. Babe is dating the biggest guy on the football team but she has fallen for the nerdiest and smallest member of the team. She can't break up with her boyfriend because he might get violent. Connie is working her way through school as a librarian. She is unlucky in love. Tommy is the star quarterback. He wants to date Pat. He gets help from Connie to learn French. She falls for him. He likes her too but is still after Pat. To help out Babe tells Pat that Tommy is very rich. Pat is now interested in him. Tommy is happy to have Pat at first but it's not all that it seems. I liked this movie. It is a fun musical. Although there is one song about Indians (native americans) that probably could be cut because it is offensive.

Thursday: Effie Gray (2014)
This is based on a true story set in the mid 1800s. Effie marries the art critic John Ruskin when she is very young. She is in love with him and has known him most of her life. He is older. Married life is not all what she thought it would be. She feels useless with nothing to do. She is isolated. He never touches her. Effie becomes mentally ill. To help her get better her husband takes her to her native Scotland. He also brings the painter Millais to paint his portrait. Millais sees how she is mistreated. She does start to get better. Effie and Millais fall in love. They must find a way to be together. I thought this movie was interesting. It was good.

Sunday: Smoke Signals (1998)
Thomas lives at the Coeur D'alene reservation. When he was a baby a fire burnt down his house killing his parents and many others. He was saved by Arnold. His grandmother raises him. He wants to friends with Arnold's son Victor. They are very different. Arnold is depressed and abusive. One day he disappears. Now as teenager Victor has grown to be a jock, while Thomas is nerdy and very into his Native American culture. Thomas still strives to be Victor's friend. One day they get a phone call saying Arnold has died. Victor must travel to Arizona to get his father's ashes. He has no money. Thomas offers to pay if he can come too. He liked Arnold and wants to help. Reluctantly Victor agrees. They travel together, and learn about life and how things are not always what you think. I liked this movie. It was well done. I liked the transitions between the past and the present. An example is a basketball would be thrown into the air in the past and be caught by a character in the present.

Surprise Chorizo and the Floating Castle

Well after two months I was finally able to go to a restaurant on my list. I went to Tight Tacos, the SE Division location. There is neighborhood parking on the streets behind it, but you might have to drive around a little. It is a small restaurant next to other restaurants and shops. They were only open for take out but there were picnic tables you could sit at on the sidewalk. The tables were in the shade so it was nice on a warm day. From what I could see inside it was clean and modern. There is some color and hanging Christmas lights. The service was good. I got three tacos: chicken, carnitas, and asada. I think that I got chorizo instead of asada. It was actually the best one flavor wise. The carnitas meat was good but there wasn't a lot of flavor. I forgot to ask for no onions so I had to scrape them off. The tacos were good. I would go back. The one problem I had was they serve the food in takeout containers. And they have tables for you to sit ...

Wolf and the Fake Fiancee

Friday: You. Me & Tuscany (2026)        Anna is a young woman who lost her passion for cooking after her mother passed. She's been housesitting, but it's not enough. One night she meets and Italian man, Matteo. They hit it off and he tells her about his empty villa in Italy that he never uses. Anna takes this as an invitation to use her pre-paid plane ticket and fly to Italy and stay at his empty villa. She gets caught by his family. They assume she is his fiancee and she goes along with it. Anna is introduced to the rest of the family, including Matteo's adopted brother Michael. Michael and Anna immediately hit it off, but can't do anything because she is engaged to his brother. When Matteo shows up things get even more complicated. I thought this movie was alright. It's cute and nice to have a new romantic comedy come out in theaters . It's just a little cheesy and over the top for me. Almost like a Hallmark movie or the like.  Saturday: The Bad Guys...
