The place I went to this week wasn't officially on my list. I went on Monday and ran into a lot of problems because it was Labor Day. So a lot of places were closed. My sister and I got ice cream at a place called Eb and Bean. It is on SE Division. It is in the D street village complex. It is very sleek and modern with bright colors. They are a organic frozen yogurt place. They also have non dairy options. I got a chocolate and vanilla swirl with graham crackers and hot fudge. It was good. It had a strange consistency though. I've noticed it with other organic ice cream treats. Almost like there is more milk or ice/water than other frozen yogurt. The flavor was almost diluted. But on a hot day it hit the spot.
Monday: The Palm Beach Story (1942)
Gerry and Tom start as a happy married couple. But Tom's continued failure as an inventor puts a strain on the marriage. Gerry believes they are not longer in love and should get a divorce. She goes to Florida to get the divorce. Along the way she meets a millionaire with little concern about how much money he spends. He starts to fall for Gerry. She comes up with the idea of marrying him and getting money for Tom' invention. Tom follows her to Florida to try and stop her. I liked this movie. I find it interesting that women would go to Vegas or Palm Beach to get a divorce. Like they had to wait there till it was all over. It's too bad they couldn't just do it in the state they lived in. I'm a little confused on the whole thing.
Tuesday: Island of Lost Souls (1932)
This movie is about a man named Edward who gets lost at sea. He is picked up by a ship. But the ship only takes him to the next port and not to where he needs to go. He was meant to meet his fiancé. Edward ends up on an island belonging to Dr. Moreau. Dr. Moreau is a strange man who is clearly up to no good. Edward starts to notice there is something wrong with the native people. They have strange facial features and fur. He also meets the only woman on the island. Edward discovers that Dr. Moreau discovered a way to turn animals into people. So all the native people were once animals. The woman was a panther. Dr. Moreau wanted to see if she could have feelings for a man like a normal woman would. Edward has to find a way to escape. This movie was ok. Some of it was a little cheesy. I did like that the man was the damsel in distress who need rescuing by a woman.
Wednesday: Two Loves (1961)
Anna is an American teacher living in New Zealand. She is teaching the indigenous children. She has a strained relationship with another teacher. He is childish and unstable. Anna also starts to have feelings for the school supervisor. He is an older man but is kind and caring. This movie wasn't very good. The acting wasn't good. The filming quality was almost like a low budget TV show. They decoration choices were strange. Anna's house was purple with a lime green trim. It didn't look good at all.
Thursday: The Last Emperor (1987)
This is the epic story of the last emperor of China. Pu Yi became emperor when he was only 3 or 4. Being raised from a young age to believe that you are the most important person and having everything done for you, made him a narcissistic and spoiled child. When he was a teenager the government changed and he was no longer the ruling emperor. He was an emperor in name only. China went through many changes. He started working with the Japanese. Pu Yi wanted them to make him emperor again. This was during the time when tensions between China and Japan were high. He became emperor but was really just a puppet for the Japanese. He ended up in prison for his alliances. I liked this movie a lot. It was interesting to learn about this part of China's history. I also enjoyed the parts that took place in the 20s. The clothes and music were fun.
Friday: Where'd You Go, Bernadette (2019)
Bernadette is a formerly famous architect living an almost recluse life style with her husband and daughter in Seattle. Her daughter wants to go on a trip to Antartica. Bernadette agrees to go but then becomes anxious. She has become anti-social and anxious since moving to Seattle. She does not want to be on a cruise ship in such an extreme situation. Bernadette is also feuding with her supermom neighbor. More and more goes wrong for her. Then one day she disappears. Her husband and daughter go on a journey to find her. I liked this movie a lot. It was really good. I liked all design ideas Bernadette had. I don't know why it isn't playing at more theaters. In my opinion it is a late summer hit.
