Family Curse and the Martians

Tuesday: The House of the Seven Gables (1940)

The Pyncheon family was cursed after they stole land from another family. They continue to fail and struggle to keep their wealth. One hundred and sixty years later the family is still struggling. Clifford, the eldest son, has convinced his father that it is finally time to sell the mansion they live in. He plans to move to New York with his fiancee, Hepzibah. Clifford and his father ask Jaffery, the youngest, to come home. When he learns the news he is upset. He wants to keep the mansion, believing deeds and treasure are hidden in the walls. After their father dies of a heart attack he claims it was Clifford who murdered their father. Clifford is sent to prison. Hepzibah waits for him to be released and tries to help secure the family fortune. I thought this movie was ok.

Friday: Mars Attacks! (1996)

Earth learns aliens are out there when Martians make contact with the U.S. Scientists believe they are so intelligent they must be peaceful. They communicate with the Martians and agree on a place to meet. The Martians attack. Officials believe it was a miscommunication. They agree to meet again. And again the Martians attack. Finally the people of Earth start to see they are in grave danger and nothing will stop the Martians. This movie was alright. Pretty silly and cheesy.

Saturday: Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)

This movie is based on true events. The Osage people in Oklahoma discovered oil on their land. They became incredibly wealthy. White men found this out and wanted that land. Believing they had more rights to it. William Hale had his own wealth from his cattle ranch nearby. Everyone knew him and he was a friend to the Osage people. His nephew, Ernest, comes to work for him after serving in WWI. He is encouraged by his uncle to marry a Native American woman, then he would have access to her wealth. Ernest falls in love with Mollie, who's family owns a large piece of land with oil on it. They get married. His uncle uses his connections to kill Native people to get their land. Ernest's wife's family is no exception. The FBI eventually get involved. I thought this movie was alright. As I've said many times I'm not the biggest fan of westerns. That being said the acting was really good. And the movie was done respectfully to the Osage people.

Sunday: Belle de Jour (1967)

This is a French movie. Severine is an uptight and bored housewife. Her husband is a doctor. She spends most of her time on her own. One day she learns that someone in her social circle is working as a prostitute at a brothel a couple days a week. This fascinates Severine. She decides she wants to do it too. She takes on the name Belle de Jour. Severine is able to live out her fantasies. She is happier and more carefree. This movie was alright.

Surprise Chorizo and the Floating Castle

Well after two months I was finally able to go to a restaurant on my list. I went to Tight Tacos, the SE Division location. There is neighborhood parking on the streets behind it, but you might have to drive around a little. It is a small restaurant next to other restaurants and shops. They were only open for take out but there were picnic tables you could sit at on the sidewalk. The tables were in the shade so it was nice on a warm day. From what I could see inside it was clean and modern. There is some color and hanging Christmas lights. The service was good. I got three tacos: chicken, carnitas, and asada. I think that I got chorizo instead of asada. It was actually the best one flavor wise. The carnitas meat was good but there wasn't a lot of flavor. I forgot to ask for no onions so I had to scrape them off. The tacos were good. I would go back. The one problem I had was they serve the food in takeout containers. And they have tables for you to sit ...
