Shang-Chi and the Killer Uncle

 Monday: Gun Crazy (1950)

As a young boy Bart was obsessed with guns. He would never do anyone any harm. He wouldn't even hunt. Then one day he brings a gun to school, again meaning no harm. He is disciplined and sent to a reform school. Later when he is a young man he returns home. Bart isn't sure what he is going to do with his life. The circus comes to town. He sees a gun show starring a young woman named Annie. Bart is pulled on stage to be part of the act. He proves just how good he is with a gun. The circus owner hires him to be part of the act. Bart and Annie fall in love. Annie wants the finer things in life. So they leave the circus and start using their gun skills to steal from stores and banks. They are good at it. But their luck runs out. I thought this was a good movie.

Wednesday: Shadow of a Doubt (1943)

Charlie is a young woman living at home with her parents and younger siblings. She is named after her Uncle Charlie. They have a special bond. Charlie thinks they need something to shake things up. A visit from her uncle would be just the thing. At the same time Uncle Charlie has two men following him. To get them off his trail he decides to go visit his older sister and her kids. Charlie is overjoyed to have her uncle visiting. But soon she starts to feel that something is not quite right with her uncle. He is acting strange. Two men show up claiming to be reporters but who are actually detectives. They are searching for the serial killer called the "Merry Widow" killer. Charlie starts to think her uncle might be the killer. This is a good movie. It is by Alfred Hitchcock. For a long time I swore I had seen this movie. But I wasn't sure. I finally decided to record it just to see if I had seen it. I hadn't. Now I can saw without a shadow of doubt that I have seen Shadow of a Doubt. Sorry I had to.

Friday: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)

Shaun is the son of a powerful man named Xu. Xu stole the ten rings when he was a young man. They gave him great power and made him immortal. Xu formed the organization called the Ten Rings that was his own private army. He lived for hundreds of years before settling down. Shaun trained to be part of the Ten Rings. But then he ran away. Years later when he is a young man the Ten Rings come for an amulet that he has from his mother. Shaun and his friend Katy travel to China to confront his past. I don't want to say too much more. This movie was so good. So well done. It's awesome to have an asian superhero. That must be so exciting for Simu Liu who played Shaun knowing kids will dress up like him for Halloween. Asian kids have a superhero who looks like them. He will be like Chadwick Boseman in that way.

Sunday: Double Feature- Live Flesh (1997) and Respect (2021)

Live Flesh is a Spanish film. Victor becomes obsessed with a woman named Elena who he hooked up with. Elena has no interest in Victor. He shows up at her apartment one night. Victor won't leave. Elena threatens him with a gun. A shot is fired but no one is hurt. Police are called. David and his partner Sancho arrive at Elena's apartment to find them struggling over the gun. David tries to calm them down, while Sancho makes the situation worse. David is shot. Victor is found guilty and sent to prison. Six years later he is released. David and Elena got married. David is in a wheelchair and is on a basketball team. Victor wants Elena but decides to back off. He has an affair with Sancho's wife. David believes Victor is stalking Elena and so he starts to follow him. It all comes to a head and turns everyone's life upside down. I thought this movie was alright. It is another Pedro Almodovar film.

Respect is about Aretha Franklin. From a young age she was a great singer. Mostly performing for her dad's friends at his parties and at his church. When she is a young woman she performs at rallies and conferences for Martin Luther King Jr. Aretha later gets a record deal. She has many records but no hits. She falls for a dangerous man who gets her a new deal. Aretha starts making hits and becomes a success. But her life is not easy. She continues to struggle with an overbearing father and an abusive husband. Despite all her struggles she is able to come out on the other side and still be a huge star. I thought this was a good movie. She was an amazing woman. I didn't realize all the people she grew up knowing like Martin Luther King Jr., Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Smokey Robinson. She had a hard life. She was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So cool that the first woman inducted was a black woman. Jennifer Hudson was handpicked by Aretha to play her in the movie.

Surprise Chorizo and the Floating Castle

Well after two months I was finally able to go to a restaurant on my list. I went to Tight Tacos, the SE Division location. There is neighborhood parking on the streets behind it, but you might have to drive around a little. It is a small restaurant next to other restaurants and shops. They were only open for take out but there were picnic tables you could sit at on the sidewalk. The tables were in the shade so it was nice on a warm day. From what I could see inside it was clean and modern. There is some color and hanging Christmas lights. The service was good. I got three tacos: chicken, carnitas, and asada. I think that I got chorizo instead of asada. It was actually the best one flavor wise. The carnitas meat was good but there wasn't a lot of flavor. I forgot to ask for no onions so I had to scrape them off. The tacos were good. I would go back. The one problem I had was they serve the food in takeout containers. And they have tables for you to sit ...
