Guy and the Convict's Island

Monday: When Were You Born (1938)

Mei Lei travels on a ship back to San Fransisco. She is an astrology expert and often does readings for people. On the ship she predicts that a man will die in two days. Later she is proven right. He is murdered. The police question her. They are skeptical of astrology in the beginning but she gives them insight they wouldn't have gotten otherwise. So they agree to let her read each of the people they question to learn what she can about them from their sign. Her insight helps solve the case. I thought this movie was ok. The writing wasn't the best. Even so Anna May Wong, Mei Lei, acts circles around everyone else.

Tuesday: High Wall (1947)

A man has killed his wife but he has no memory of doing it. He is admitted to the psych ward. They discover that he has brain damage which could have caused his violent behavior. His doctor is not convinced that he did commit the murder. He wants to get his memories back to see if he did in fact kill his wife. The doctor helps him. This movie was ok.

Wednesday: Isle of Fury (1936)

There is an island in the South Seas where convicts travel to to escape getting arrested. They live with the people of the island in relative peace. Val is a murderer living on the island. Many don't know his secret. He runs a pearl business using the native people as divers. On the night of his wedding to Lucille a ship gets caught in the storm near the island. Val and his men go out to save as many men as they can. Only two survive. One is a man named Eric. Eric immediately takes a liking to Lucille. He also offers to help with the dive the next day. The divers refuse to dive because they are scared of something in the water. Val dives down to see what it is. Eric ends up saving him from the danger. Later it is discovered the Eric is a detective sent to arrest Val. I thought this movie was alright.

Friday: Free Guy (2021)

Guy lives a normal life. He gets the same coffee everyday and goes to work at the bank. And everyday the bank is robbed. Crime is happening all over the city. Guy is just happy to talk to his friend behind the counter and later go for beers by the beach. Then one day he meets a woman who changes everything. He wants to try a new drink and wear different clothes. Guy also gets sunglasses like the other sunglass people. He is able to see more and learns how to make money. Later he meets the woman again. She tells him that she is trying to get a video clip at a stash house. To help she tells him he has to level up. In the real world the woman is named Millie. She created a game that was stolen by the creator of Free City. She needs to get the video clip to prove her game was stolen. Free City is the game that Guy is a character in. Millie's ex-partner works for the guy who stole the game. When Guy finds out he is just a game character he decides to help Millie and help save his game. This movie was better than I thought it was going to be. It had a lot going on outside of the game in the real world. There are some great moments in the final battle. I'll just say that it makes sense why it's associated with Disney.

Saturday: Mysterious Skin (2004)

Brian believes that when he was little he was abducted by aliens. He is obsessed with finding out what happened to him. Another teenager boy in his town, Neil, has a similar experience but knows the truth. He was groomed and sexually assaulted by his baseball coach when he was a kid. Neil was already starting to realize he was gay but that changed his relationship with men forever.  As a teenager Neil is a hustler and has sex for money. His life becomes more and more dangerous. Brain starts to remember what happened. He knows Neil was there and seeks him out for answers. This movie was ok. It was disturbing. Not what I thought it was going to be about.

Sunday: The Bride Wore Black (1968)

This is a French movie. Julie's husband was killed on the day of their wedding. Her depression turns to rage. She seeks revenge on the men responsible for his death. Julie kills them. Later she finds out that the act wasn't as sinister as she thought. She still hunts the men down. This movie was alright. It felt like a Hitchcock movie.

Surprise Chorizo and the Floating Castle

Well after two months I was finally able to go to a restaurant on my list. I went to Tight Tacos, the SE Division location. There is neighborhood parking on the streets behind it, but you might have to drive around a little. It is a small restaurant next to other restaurants and shops. They were only open for take out but there were picnic tables you could sit at on the sidewalk. The tables were in the shade so it was nice on a warm day. From what I could see inside it was clean and modern. There is some color and hanging Christmas lights. The service was good. I got three tacos: chicken, carnitas, and asada. I think that I got chorizo instead of asada. It was actually the best one flavor wise. The carnitas meat was good but there wasn't a lot of flavor. I forgot to ask for no onions so I had to scrape them off. The tacos were good. I would go back. The one problem I had was they serve the food in takeout containers. And they have tables for you to sit ...
